80Gb PS3 out Aug 27 th in UK (not BC)

Would only ever buy a PS3 when its BC, disappointed with this

You had your chance when it came out and didnt.

Considering my 60GB cost me £420 I dont see £299 as too bad considering a PS2 can be bought seperately for all of £60 now.

I've actually used my BC now.

After playing, and falling in love with God of War on the PSP, I decided it was high time to play God of War II, so am playing it on my PS3.

It doesn't look too hot, jaggy, looks a bit rough, but it's playable, and still brilliant fun.

However, as was pointed out a post or two above, I paid £400 for my PS3. When the non BC consoles came out, they lowered the price, so people moaning could still buy a PS3 and a PS2 for cheaper than a PS3 was.
I doubt most PS3 gamers really use the BC, maybe at first, but once the novelty wore off... same with PS2, after a while, I'm sure not that many people were fussed about PS1 BC.

Also, maybe they are planning on releasing single PS2 games on the PSN Store? Each one specifically tweaked to get the best out of it, and make it 100% compatible. This would be the best way to play them on PS3, fully compatible, and stored on the HDD, so no disks required. Also, Sony stand more chance of selling them, if PS3s don't have BC, so makes more sense to them.

As for disk space, I have a 250gb drive in mine, with 100gb free, so even the 80gb wouldn't do the job. If I were in the market for a PS3 now, I'd just get the 40gb version, and upgrade the HDD immediately.*

If anybody is that fussed about BC, they can buy my PS3 for £1,000, I'll even leave the 250gb drive in there ;)

The newer PS3s put out less heat and noise too. My neighbour has one in a very confined space, and the fans don't even spin up during upscaling of DVDs. My 60gb one does, although not loud enough to annoy, I can't hear it above my projector, but it's still a plus point of the 40gb model.

It's worth loosing BC to get a cheaper console, and a cooler/quieter/less electricity using one... IMO ;)

Vin.

*EDIT: actually, no I wouldn't. The 80gb is nearly here and comes with a DS3? That's worth it in itself. I bought a DS3 last November from Asia, makes a real difference... not the rumble, as much as the build quality, and better control with the joysticks.

do sony make a profit on the ps3 console yet? in a way it makes good business sense to remove bc from the ps3.

tbh i wouldnt be suprised if sony made more money selling the ps2 than the ps3 (margin wise)

reducing costs on the new tech and then the extra ps2 sales where the costs would have dropped considerably.

Yes, there is free program called PCSX2 which allows you to play ps2 games on the pc (legally). Amazing that a few people can create a ps2 emulator in their spare time, while a multi billion dollar company like Sony can't even create one when they have all the detailed technical information not released to the public and are working 24/7!

Sony never have been known for listening to their customers though.

Out of interest, how well does it work?

As I said, I recently bought God of War II, and am playing it on my PS3.
However, I remember many years ago, back in the 90s, using a PC based PS1 emulator, which did such a lot better a job of rendering the graphics.
It bilinear filtered everything, and just made the graphics look so much better.

Does this PS2 emulator do a similar thing?
I'm just wondering if it looks better, whether to try playing it on my PC instead.... though I'll have to play God of War with a 360 controller ;)
(assuming the emulator uses it)

Vin.

So they are phasing out the 40gb and replacing them with a new SKU of 80 GB and DS3.

Is there any idea if they are likely to reduce the price of the new SKU for xmas or next year?

As others on here I've got a 60gb model and dont think I've used the BC once either :p However I do get lots of use out of the card reader and 4 usb slots :D

Your right, hardly anyone buying a £300 PS3 has got a hdtv..... or not. The number of wasted composite cables must be massive, contributing further to sonys damage to the environment..

craftily answered but not actually what I asked - there are multitudes more SDtv's than HD versions, and therefore the wastage is potentially FAR higher with your choice

The 360 comes with a hd cable, ..

Not true at all, certain sku's might but not every purchased x360 came with an hdmi cable I should know I had to purchase an extra one

the ps3 could at least come with component if not hdmi, it's a hd console and selling it without a hd cable just screams of cheapness. Every tv in the EU has scart and s-video in the USA, but instead they bundle the worst, cheapest video cable, composite..

Just as my launch x360 came with worst possible option also - face it , that variety of cable has been standard bundled for years, even in this gen so dont just pick on Sony

All these cost cuttings are what is making me wait longer to buy a ps3, I'm certainly not alone in waiting for the price to come down after so much stuff being cut out and having to buy extras for the console like a hdmi cable.

Did you complain about paying extra for a hdd, for wireless etc etc - and you are complaining about a £5 -10 cable?

I don't think the lack of HDMI cable is a dealbreaker for most people and there is no point in spending a huge amount on one as it's a digital signal so that £100 gold plated one is probably no better than the £2 one from eBay. They are just trying to accomodate the majority of people, with the included cable you are able to get it home and use it, people who I know who have a PS3 didn't even realise they were missing out on anything, they thought the TV graphics were what it could do.

do sony offer a warranty service on imported consoles? also i think you would have to import any blu-ray films if u watch many.

No thats not the case.

I imported mine from Hong Kong a week after the UK release and it plays Blurays from all over the world.
I didnt think twice about BC either, as there are 3 PS2's in the house anyway.

And it would have cost Sony next to nothing to include one.

As it would MS but they dont even include it in every sku (and they were first to market), so why not blame MS equally?

Thats very misleading - there is no ps3 sold around the world that is region free for BR.

Dont get me wrong there are discs that are released all around the world that are region free, but with locked down discs from all different regions I am sure you would encounter issues.

A. This is a thread about the PS3 and for a system designed around HD not including ANY HD cable is very poor.

B. The 360 Elite comes with a HDMI cable and a Component and a Composite, the normal model comes with a HD Component cable and it's only the budget model that doesn't come with one.

You can shout as much as you like about how pathetic MS are for not including a HD cable in the £150 Arcade SKU but to call this like for like is lunacy.

Its an obvious money saving scheme. Even if Sony got them for a quid each theyre still saving several million. Its mainly down to the cost of Blu-ray, and Sony trying to cut as much costs as possible in order to bring the RRP within a suitable range for the general public. Also a lot of people will not use HDMI.

It renders games at 1080p (and beyond I think) which makes a huge difference. The most popular games work without bugs providing your pc is powerful enough, at least 3GHz Core 2.

What matters is how many ps3 owners have a hdtv, not the average person though.

The premium and elite come with a component and hdmi cable respectivley. And the core wasn't capable of hd output.

I haven't got a 360. Whats annoying is having to order components seperately from different shops instead of having them all in the same box.
