Morning all!

I'm after a pair of gloves to wear while lifting weights, any particular suggestions?

I'm also interested in making some protein shakes but I have no (well.. some, thanks to Makunouchi) idea of what I need. I have a blender, though it's at least 20 years old but it'll do for now - that's pretty much it, though.

Anyway, I have absolutely know idea what whey protein I should buy, or even if I should be buying that at all as there are so many different bulk powers. Then I don't know whether to buy flavoured or unflavoured stuff, how much I should use per shake, whether to use milk or water or whatever, etc.

Basically I'd just like a quick run down of what I need and what I need to do to start supplementing my diet with a little bit extra protein (and/or other stuff if necessary).

Thank you in advance!

The grips on most barbells are like cheese graters on my hands. They're holding back my deadlift, for one, since I could lift a lot more if my hands could take it. After doing various things with the free weights, lat pull downs, etc. my hands become really painful so I feel that a pair of gloves would help a lot. A washable pair would be nice, but it's not a necessity.

I was thinking of buying the following:

Medium Weight Lifting Gloves - £8.99
Plastic Scoop (Small) - £0.30
Plastic Scoop (Large) - £0.50

And either
MP Blender Bottle (600ml) - £0.99
Or
My Protein MixMaster Shaker (700ml) - £1.95

I also need to decide which whey protein to get. What's the difference between Impact Whey Isolate and Impact Whey Protein?

I'd really advise against using gloves. You might think they'll help your grip but in the long run they'll just hold you back. It's a painful process but it's much better to let your hands and grip toughen up naturally.

As above, when your grip does eventually struggle with the weight rather than the surface you're holding buy some chalk.

I found gloves didn't help with deadlifting at all... the weight just pulls the glove and that grates your hand. Go natural... my hands are still soft!

Gloves do nothing and are a short term fix. Ok I've calluses all over my hands but it's just part of me - that's a natural way of getting your hands tough. Use chalk if you feel you need to, but keep away from gloves, they really don't help - I do 200+kg DLs and 100Kg+ pull downs/BORs without needing gloves, I'm sure you can do it too.

Errr, how exactly do they do 'nothing'? They do exactly what they are supposed to, protect your hands from the bar grip. Wearing gloves or not makes zero difference, lets not turn this into a 'macho' thing, you shouldnt be putting someone off wearing gloves if thats what they want to do, just because you look down on them.

Personally i use them because of my job, because i cant really afford to have hands that feel like sandpaper when im shaking the man of a man worth millions, its just not done.

And if your gloves are rucking up and hurting when your doing deadlifts then suggest trying another set of gloves.

What exercises do you think you'll need them for?

I used to use gloves for dips on occasion because my hands tend to go rather numb and they work well at preventing that. However I decided it was too much of a faff trying to remember them every time and put them on so now I just give my hands a bit of a shake to try and bring back feeling, that or simply ignore the fact I can't feel my hands. :D

If your lactose intolerent go for the isolate, if not stick with the impact whey protein also whats your diet like? They are called supplements for a reason and will do no good if your diet is crap.

I've been using a towel recently for added grip on things like dips, works a treat :]

wearing gloves makes zero difference? are you sure? it will limit your grip, stopping you from lifting a proper intensive weight.
its got nothing to do with hurting while deadlifting, having your skin being ripped off is much worse remember.., its got nothing to do with being macho. its to do with having a decent grip meaning you can concentrate on the exercise rather than whether the glove will hold or not.

Cant shake the hands of a man worth millions? Don't be a pussy :/ i bet you let them grip harder than you and you roll your hand under to show weakness :/

I appreciate all of the advice, everyone. Thank you. However, I still think I could benefit from using a pair of gloves. If not, at least my hands won't hurt so much that I can't actually finish a set! It's not my grip that's the problem, it's "grippy" part of the bar rubbing against my hands.

Pigeon_Killer, thank you for the information about deadlift grips. Most of the time I tend to have both palms facing the same direction, I'll try the mixed grip more and see if that helps at all.

Ah, thank you for clearing that up, blitz2163, and thanks for the discount code! I don't really want to spend more than £30 on a tub of whey protein so what weight do you think I should get and how long is it likely to last me roughly? Should I get a flavoured tub of the stuff, too? If not, would it work out cheaper/better just to add some Nesquik or something?

Also, is there anything else I need apart from oats and what quantities of each item should I use per shake?

No problem. I find mixed grip much easier on the hands and I probably gain about 30/40K and a hell of a lot more reps over the normal grip.

Just use Nesquik to flavour it.

I really wouldn't recommend doing deadlifts with a mixed grip. It causes imbalance in your form, which you really can't afford when going heavy.

Most people find it easier to lift heavier with a mixed grip and if you change the hand that is supinated and pronated with each set I really can't see it being a problem.
