Stewart Downing? Stewart Bloody Downing? I know £18m is a bit much for Barry but to go for Downing if the Barry deal falls apart would be an awful mistake. I'd rather see us get done for tapping up Downing if it meant us not signing him if you get my point.

I saw him play about 4-5 times last season and I have to say hes not that great. Didn't help the rest of his team was hopeless
Downing is bloody brilliant and is only going to get better

Chips in with his fair share of goals but doesn't get anywhere near enough assists for a winger. Much like Bentley, he's a big fish in small pond and only really puts in a big performance in one or two big games a season.
Absolute Bull, yes he went through a bad patch when he though he was better than he actually was but now hes found his feet again and is playing some awesome football

I presume the pure bit is key to what you've said because there are countless players that can or do play on the left that are far better than him?

He is garbage, and the sooner people get it into their heads that just because he can kick a ball with his left foot without falling over doesnt make him the next Ryan Giggs or Pele, the better.

I think you mentioned the pure bit because you know full well that there are very few natural left wingers around. In fact the only other i can think of is Petrov and he's better than Downing
Gah its unbelievable how naive some people are when it comes to football, the kid has bags of talent and would fit in great in most teams.
Just cause he plays for an unfashionable team everyone thinks hes crap but if you sit down and watch him play for 90 minutes week in week out you'll see how good he really is.
There is no way you can judge someone from the 30 seconds boro get on MoTD each week, the 15 minutes he gets at the end of an england game where no one has time to make an impact and and 3 games a season where boro are on tv.
3 England managers in a row have included him in the squad because hes a good player !
If he'd come through the liverpool or manchester united academy the whole country would be worshipping him

Yes because it takes a lot more than being average to get through our academy's and in to our first team than it does for Boro's.
