All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

How can you write those two sentences one after another and not feel your logic break?

I'm reminded of someone else with that quoted part. :p

Players (like any other saleable commodity) are worth what people are prepared to pay for them, whether they represent a good return on the investment is another matter entirely. Andrei Shevchenko (for instance) was worth £35m because Chelsea were willing to pay that much for him, the fact that he in no way returned anywhere near that level in terms of performances is neither here nor there really at the instant they took the decision to gamble on him.

Agree whole heartedly about prices. However, Villa is being touted at 32mn following the Euro's. Keane is almost as good, the same age and proven in the league. He will score more with a better supply imho as Spurs midfield isnt that good at through balls etc.

Quite happy to pay 18mn for Keane as long as we well Voronin to make up the approximate difference. Pacheco and Babel can share the 4th choice burden.

While I completely agree this has to be the fundamental reason to buy any player (and his performances didnt equate to £35m worth) I think Andrei and a few other really phenomenal players - or maybe more accurately players who have unquestionably been world class elsewhere (Veron anyone?) - increase shirt sales astronomically

Just as a hypothetical question - from a fans point of view - if the club break even from sell-on amount + percieved performance value + shirt sales, was it a good deal or not?

(obviously a really good player for any club, the shirt sales is an added bonus and if you are very lucky you buy cheap and sell expensive)

Speaking as a fan of a relatively small club (in comparison to the giants of the EPL) then yes, it would be worthwhile for me to be able to say that player X played for Hearts. If we didn't lose anything on the deal then so much the better, there would be a level of disappointment if the player didn't reach the level of performances they previously had but I can live with that provided they didn't make the team worse.

People found out they were fake before there was any talk of Spurs complaining, I was suspended at the time though so I couldn't post :p

Hahahahahah that's hilarious !!!

Kind of like post #4884 though :/

:D:D:D

Still a bit worried about Wenger. Adebayour seems to be staying which is ok, if a huge offer came in then fair enough but still worth hanging onto if we don't get offered more than £15m imo. Not much about new signings though, which considering we were stretched even before Hleb and Flamini left is a bit worrying.

The evidence Spurs have handed in has been put together over a year. This hasn't come about solely from that interview.

Well that mis-quote must have had something significant to do with the appeal, otherwise Levy would have submitted the "evidence" before hand surely?

I think the other evidence are more likely to be responses to direct questions about said player (after all it was widely reported last summer we went in for him)

Thank you for that

Man Utd where widely condemned for paying £17m+ for Carrick two seasons ago, since he joined he has had a major effect on winning three major prizes (101 appearances with 14 being as sub), may not be cheap but worth every single penny- without even considering the new deal he has signed

I guess some could still (try to) argue he isnt a "key" player

Best bit for me is them talking about the greatest goal of all time against Manchester United (host: "We're looking at it here!"), whilst playing some random goal he scored for Norwich against Birmingham.
