They did indeed. Beat a Villa side, consisting of quite a few first team squad players, very easily in the play-off final.
We've got quite a few youngsters coming through who could be pushing for a place in the first team over the next couple of seasons. N'gog is likely to go straight into the first team squad though, likely to replace Voronin if/when he leaves.

Yeah and they will do well when they go to another team because they arent given a chance. Got to be brave to push through with the youngsters these days. Only Wenger seems to be doing it these days but I wish he would go for a happy mix and buy a few more experienced players.
This medical has been taking place for about a week now!
Nah, like Cattermole he hasn't really fulfilled his potential yet, although he's still young he has no technical ability other than to run fast. Downing is a lot better than Johnson.

That's all well and good but none of them seem to make the grade in the premier league. Neil Mellor is the prime example, knocked them in for fun in the reserves and was hailed as this amazing talent but couldn't cut the mustard at the top level and now plays for Preston.
Jack Hobbs, Paul Anderson et al may be great 'talents' but making that step up is what counts and few have done it since the days of Owen, Gerrard and Carragher. Certainly since Benitez has been here I have yet to see someone make the step up from the Academy/ reserves and hold down a first team place regularly.
Heard on the radio this morning that Arbeloa is wanting to go back to Spain for personal reasons. Didn't say anything else.
With speculation over Finnan joining Villa in the Barry deal, then its pretty much certain Carra will be our RB with Degen as back up next season. It is really quite awful considering we're supposed to be strengthening our team instead of weakening it.
We missed out on Alves a few seasons ago due to being stingy with money, but thats fine, its in the past. But what I don't understand is why didn't Benitez go for Rafina? Its OK getting these free players, but you cant expect them to be good first team additions. They're free and out of contract for a reason.
