Warhammer Online

Time for another MMO to come out that people will say is going to take a lot of WoW's playerbase.

Age of Conan got pwnsauced and it's gonna be Warhammers turn soon.

I don't think War is going to kill WoW, or even hurt it much.
However Warhammer has a fairly large number of people that might end up taking it on as their first MMORPG, I know a number of people that played the tabletop game in the past, play PC games now, and are interested in it.

It's also got the advantage that it's got a huge amount of potential content that could be added by adapting some of the GW content/fluff for it.

It's worth noting, historically that a good MMORPG based on an existing (and current) franchise when done well, doesn't have to cannibalise the market for existing MMORPG players to get a big player base itself.
If it did, then WoW would have killed off most of the existing MMORPG's when it started, it didn't, instead it pulled in players who were new to MMORPG's but had played the Starcraf/Warcraft RTS games or got into it because their friends had and it looked fun.

ve been in the warhammer beta for about 4 months now. all i can say is if they keep on improving it like they have its gonna be the best our of all the mmorpgs

its been anticipated that it will launch at the end of september for the longest time now its nice to see the signs are starting to point that way to.

ive been thinking of taking my minature down to the local games workshop when they do there painting night and getting someone to do me an awesome paintjob on it :)

some nice info about the game from E3
Keen spent the whole week at E3 2008 enjoying the sights and having the time of his life testing and playing games. But he couldn't wait for Warhammer.

Below are the key points of his visit with Mythic and demonstration of WAR.

Waaagh!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Graphical Improvements
• Adding lighting by hand and polishing the graphics
• Finishing the entire world before going back and touching up

Macro Customization
• They're taking a page out of the FPS book by having silhouettes be the main identifier. (Think back to DAoC when you knew who someone was just by looking at them from a distance)
• Over 400 armor sets in the game
• "We want you to feel like you can look like your class right from the beginning" was said in reference to armor sets and various outfits your characters can wear.
• Metallic dyes will be in the game using full spectrum of color
• I asked and Adam confirmed: WHITE DYE will be in the game! They have finally figured out how to get this working properly.
• Over 114 different dye colors based on Games Workshops paints for the miniatures.

Inevitable City and general city notes
• Special NPCs will appear from the Warhammer lore as capital cities increase in status rank. We got to see a few of them and they look absolutely amazing.
• The King encounter (he looks cool by the way) will be more than simply a "tank and spank" encounter. While fighting the Chaos king you'll see voids opening around you and the floor breaking apart with chaos swirling all around and the pillars in the room falling. Adam sounded really excited.
• Cities have level 20 and level 40 dungeons

PvE
• There are no instanced raid dungeons.
• Most dungeons are public where anyone can enter and fight but the bosses are instanced. (Adam made mention of Darkness Falls here though the details evade me)
• Most group content is designed for 6-12 people. King encounters are "one of the only" encounters that require a larger group of people. Adam expressed Mythic's sentiment again that raiding isn't the direction they're going.

Mounts
• Players can get a mount of their own at level 20.
• We were shown the Chaos horse (Looked freaking amazing)
• Summoned just like mounts in WoW. Open bags, clicky, poof you're on the mount.
• Mounts can be customized with armor, colors, and that sort of thing. Think macro customization like I talked about earlier.
• Mounted Combat and Flying Mounts are not completely ruled out but they're not something Mythic is thinking about doing right now. Definitely not at launch (duh).

RvR Notes
• NEW ADDITION TO THE GAME: RvR Fortresses. These "uber keeps" (quote from Adam) of "RvR Goodness" (quote from Mark Jacobs) act as an additional barrier between players and capital cities. They have also replaced the Capital cities in the battlefronts that had theirs taken away. These will offer very interesting RvR encounters.
• A realm must capture 2/3 Fortresses to make the enemy Capital vulnerable.
• Sets of gear will be spread throughout these fortresses so players will have yet again additional sets of armor to strive for from various locations in the WAR world.

Scenarios
• We were shown Nordwatch and got to see the game in action as Adam played with real beta testers.
• The combat looked fluid, polished, and extremely fun.
• In this particular scenario Adam played a Zealot and we got to see the role of a healer in action as he healed and cast offensive magic at the enemy players.
• Adam's Zealot was only level 2 yet he was able to hold his ground against level 7 players because of how scenario's work - they boost player's abilities so that everyone feels on equal footing. It was working quite well.

The Open Group System
• A new feature just introduced that will allow players to open a window and see who in their region wants more players in their group.
• Joining a "open group" is as simple as clicking the "join button".
• The Open group window shows how far you are from the prospective group in real-time travel time.
• Can see who is in the group
• Currently no filter for groups to use (IE: Only want healers) but that is more of something you would see in the regular LFG window. Open groups truly are "open".

UI
• Completely modable with LUA still
• Default layout editor comes with the game so that players can adjust the layout of their UI to their liking. This will never break with patches. (Hotbars are currently being worked into this system)
• UI Mods are all local to your computer
• I pushed for more information on whether or not UI mods could change the functionality of the default game and Adam went into details:

- Certian "Hooks" (modding lingo) will not be allowed
- It is inevitable that some people will get around these hooks but they'll be taken care of.
- Nothing like WoW's "Click to cure this automatically" or "cast this based on that".
- "Nothing that automates gameplay at all" will be allowed.
- There will be basic macros allowed in-game.

Final thoughts

Warhammer Online looks amazing. The gameplay that we were shown would take up several pages of explanation just to do it justice. It has come a very long way since we were last shown the game at a convention. Mythic Entertainment is passionate about the game and it's showing in the final stages of production. WAR is coming sooner than later. The NDA will drop here within just a few weeks and, baring any problems with the guild beta, open beta/release can't be too far behind.

Wow I had no idea Warhammer's release was so close.

I like WoW, but have high hopes for this game too, as a long time admirer of the Warhammer Lore.

Edit:

Thanks for the post Arknor.

I dont know a lot about the game, can someone explain this to me:

• Sets of gear will be spread throughout these fortresses so players will have yet again additional sets of armor to strive for from various locations in the WAR world.

• Adam's Zealot was only level 2 yet he was able to hold his ground against level 7 players because of how scenario's work - they boost player's abilities so that everyone feels on equal footing. It was working quite well.

- Why would you try to collect armor, if (implied by the 2nd bullet point) everyone gets boosted to the same level anyway?

Just signed up for the beta, bit late i know but this has slipped by me until now for some reason :( Liking the sound of a Dwarf ironbreaker :D. I wish they'd included the Skaven tho :(

RvR in DAoC was absolutely immense, it catered to the mass-RvR mob and also to the elitist full group vs. full group crowd where a large amount of teamwork and skill was required (Of which I was the latte player type).

You had mass-keep takes and relic raids - Relic Raids we're talking 150 of one side on the attack, 150 of the other side of defence and about half the amount of the 3rd side in the mix too. Even as an anti-zergling, you couldn't dislike these events, the scale of them was immense.

I'm in beta so I can't really talk about specifics, but as you can see from all the released information, WAR is focusing far more on the mass-RvR side of things with keep takes and all that jazz. Even so, I'm still looking forward to the release, it's going to be much better than anything else, barring DAoC, which will forever hold its place in my heart as the best PvP/RvR MMO ever.

me too - im pretty sick of WoW - and having a missus kinda stops you being able to play it - being able to play Warhammer Online however is something im thoroughly looking forward to.

Have the CE editions been on sale in hmv already? As they would only take my details and no cash when I wanted to order it, will be very narked if I've missed out.

Well the problem is, this game seems to be focusing entirely on 'mass' PvP. So it's just going to be pure zergs, nothing else. I remember playing on my friends RF online account to see what it was like. It has also has a mass PvP system where there was loads of players in one area fighting, and it was just pure zerg. No skill or thought involved at all.

WoW for example does have mass PvP to an extent, eg Alterac Valley, but it also has proper PvP like arenas where you have organised teams and a limited amount of players. The same with some of the other battlegrounds to a certain extent.

With regard to WAR I guess it's fine if you like mass PvP but for some or most people it'll start to wear thin and become unenjoyable very quickly especially when the PvP reward system is based primarily around what I can only describe as mindless zerging. Personally I see no fun in being zerged or zerging other people.

Well Alterac valley is not mass PvP, its instanced pvp (which there also is in WAR if thats to your taste), mass PvP is the kind of PvP seen in UO, AC and Daoc amongst other titles. Its large scale open PvP, non instanced. If the player is someone who likes organised teams with a limited number of players, theres nothing to stop them doing that in WAR in the scenarios.

The PvP reward system is not based primarily around mindless zerging, in fact, I would quite like to know what makes you even think that. The pvp rewards are earned via any form of PvP, whether its open PvP or instanced limited number pvp scenarios.
