Wanting out of Virgin Media - who next?

Hi all, I've been with Virgin media since I was 16 which when i look back on it is a depressingly long time. Up until the last 18 months or so I'd always been fairly happy with them however, lately, my connection seems to be getting slower and slower, and i seem to be getting my speed throttled to a silly degree. I never get anything like the quoted 20mb service.
Previously i'd always been put off a move as i'd need to get my bt landline activated again (how much does that cost?) and buy new wireless kit. Frankly though, I've had enough of them now.

That's where you guys come in, I'm after something new, something with a good download speed, preferrably unlimited usage and good customer service. I'm not bothered by cost too much but if i said i don't want to pay much more than £60/month combined for line rental and ISP. Also is there a way you can get a decent estimate of your potential connection speed? i've always been worried by that as a potential issue with ADSL previously.

ooh and while you're at it, i'd love to be specced new wireless equipment that i'd need, to a budget of say £120 for router etc and 2 adaptors.

thank you v v much.

Dan

PS i'm in the DY10 01562 dialing code area if that makes any diff to recommendations.

Have a look on www.samknows.com and see if your exchange is enabled for BEthere.co.uk.

They are by far one of the best ISPs around at the moment. You might even be lucky enough to live near the exchange and enjoy proper ADSL2+ speeds.

If you can get Be, instead speak to Zombi3 on here and get yourself o2. Highest 20mbit package, which is completely unlimited, for £7.50/month.

BT landline is £10/month once you get paperless billing enabled. So for £17.50/month you've got a nicer deal than the 20mbit on NTL (assuming your phoneline isn't absolutely awful - check the distance as thewanted said above).

Hi, thanks for advice. I am enabled for BE although i live about 1k away from the exchange, is that good or bad?

DSL status:
Enabled as of 30/06/2001
ADSL Max status:
Enabled as of 31/03/2006
SDSL status:
Enabled as of 30/11/2004
21CN WBC status:
Enabled as of 28/03/2008
21CN PSTN switchover target: Q1 2011

that's the info i get on it.

thanks again.

Hiya,

A BT test on my newly installed line, He said i was 2.5k away

On o2 Home Premium and now getting 11-12meg :)

Was on 20meg err i mean under 5meg cable lol

I say do as he said above ;)

If you're a kilometer away straight line then the highest I'd hope for would be 10-12meg..and probably lower.

However, that's still double the speed you get limited to when VM's STM kicks in...

I can't get BE or o2 in my area only sky :( I'm also wanting off virgin but looking at the news the last few days doesn't make me want sky no more :(

Be. should be available in my area in August so going to switch from virgin to them, i'm 1km away from the exchange and was able to get around 14 meg using the snr tweak when i was with bulldog. good thing with Be. is that there is no 12 month contract but need to give them 3 months notice.

I got rid of virgin media about a week ago and took BT up on a new line installtion for only £29.99 which i still think is going till end of september.

i didn't see that offer on the website, did you speak to them to take up that offer? it does seem quite a steep set up cost to be honest. i was wondering if i could get a reduction if i offered to switch my home phone no to BT (as no one uses the house phone anyway) but i could live with thirty quid.

Hey guys,

Does BE do traffic shaping like virgin does? Doesnt take me long to hit the cap with them so i spend most of the time capped..

I am about 500m from the exchange when i checked a few weeks ago, would this get me a decent speed with be? I checked we can have be around here using my neighbours number as we dont have a bt line..

You should be able to get a decent speed at 500m straight line. If you're lucky, nearly 20mbit.

Be don't cap or shape in any way.

Go o2 though - same service but £7.50/month if you shop around on here.

7.50 a month? for 20 meg? :o

Edit: Could work out well as ive been meaning to get an iphone :)

I dont want out I've just upgraded from 2 to 10mb and getting 1.2Mb/s

Yeah i get 2.3 megs a second so speed is fine, but then i hit the cap in next to no time and suddenly im on 560k/second (if i want to choke my connection and do nothing else).

Hutch,

It's on til at least the end of this month the bt line offer

You have to call up, (look for bt's number etc) or just use main one and play press the keypad until you're at new customer/line etc

Don't think it's advertised openly you really have to dig deep on the site

You sign an 18mth contract instead of 12mth, that's only difference

Hope that helps

If needed and you can't get a number i'll try and find the one i used to call
