I'm seriosly thinking getting that Leadtek GTX280

I notice that no one has mentioned the pre-order price for the 4870 with 1gig memory... £234? Only £30 cheaper than the GTX 280 for a card with the similar spec. I know the memory prob won't make a load of difference, but when you compare those i'd say the GTX looks very attractive.

(Can of worms opened, queue the slating coming my way....! lol) :)

£30 cheaper but still slower no doubt so I'm not sure whats so great about that, but it's great there finally getting round to releasing a 1GB version.

Precisely! I'd say if you were comparng the cards you'd have to compare the 1gig versions at which point the, to me, the GTX is certainly the more attractive.

I would like to know why, people will compare all the cards and depending what important to them they get that card.
People will and have looked at the 280 and 4870/260 and the people who want the best will get the 280 and people who want a card under 200 will get the 4870/260.
So saying you got to compare the 1 gigs cards are wrong as people will look at the 1gig/512 4870 and the 280 and compare, if the 4870 1 gig is not worth the extra £30 then it will not get a look in just like the 8800gt 1gig and the cards before it sporting extra memory that didn't do squat.

Only the leadtek and Gainwards though really. The other brands are still pushing past the £300 mark (£350 for Evga last time I looked). I know there all about the same, but the prices seem to be the most expensive 4870s vs the cheapest 280s to make these arguments hold any ground.

The point i was making is that a card with half the memory is always going to be cheaper. Really what i'm getting at is that for a fair comparision then the 1 gig cards should be compared to each other. If NV wanted im sure they could knock 1/2 gig off the card and knock the price down even further. If some board partners can do the cards at this price then i'm sure they all could, if they wanted to...

Remember the original GTS? They cut the ram in half, knocked a good ammount off the price. I'm just saying that all the talk of value for money and bang for buck takes on a different slant when you fairly compare the equiv cards. I;m not knocking the 4870, its a great looking card, but evey thread has turned towards price/performance and when you take the 1gig card into account that point has a bit less meaning.

Fair comparision, there both 1GB cards.

.

I''m really amazed they havent done this, they could even half the memory on GTX260 and release a slight lower clocked version with 434MB of memory, it wouldn't be low enough to really kill performance like with the POS 320MB GTS cards.

Of course people will compare all the cards and choose what's best for them. I only stating that a fairer comparison, price/performance wise, would be comparing 2 cards with as near to equal specs as possible.

You never know, they might just do so. Thing is they didn't do this with the GTS until they saw the 640 model wasn't selling as well as they'd hoped. These cards have only been out for a month or so, so i doubt we'd see anything like this for a while. Would rock tho, imagine a GTX280 with 512mb memory at around £200. Now there's bang for buck!!

spec's don't mean squat it is performance or/and price,(with Cf and sli drivers come into it as well)the gpu's (280 and the 4870)are a different designs and memory different as well so how you compare them?.

I don't really care what spec's the card is but how it runs games and what price it is,i look at the 280 and 4870 and will chose by price and how it runs games, so i would more likely get the 4870 over the 280.

I was of the opinion £299. Maybe as much as £350 on release. I cant see them gouging it much more than that. They said they where going with an agressive pricing strategy and they delivered that with the other two cards.
