If you are a student working part-time during the weekends, but as a permanent role, and earning less than the Personal Allowance, which IR form do you use to claim the tax back?
edit: p38s
You do not have to deduct tax from the pay of a student who works for you solely during a holiday if
on this note, if you are a full time student doing an industrial placement for 6 months can you claim any tax back?
thanks
Being a student has no bearing at all on how you are taxed.
If you earn £5,435 or less in this financial year you will be reimbursed any tax you have paid. If you expect to earn less than £5,435 in this financial year, for example having a summer job but not expecting to work for the rest of the year you can contact HMRC who will give you a form to fill out which will stop you from being taxed. If, however, you do go above the limit having filled in that form you will be taxed heavily on anything you earn after.
In your case it's likely you will be given a tax rebate at the end of the financial year automatically, if not then you should contact HMRC requesting a rebate
thanks, unfortunately - or fortunately (depending on how you look at it) - I am earning over £5435 in the six months. I guess I can't get anything back then.
Thanks
Daven
The ~£5k tax free amount is tax free for everyone, whether you earn £5 or £500'000, you still don't pay tax on the allowance, just the earnings above that amount.
At the end of the tax year you'll be able to claim back the tax paid on the first £5k but you'll have to pay 20% (iirc) on earnings over that amount.
bah that is what i thought, but someone said that students can claim back all tax except NI, i was skeptical but hopeful!!
thanks

Its the P46 mate, I had to do this when I worked for Vodafone in my last 2 years at uni.
No it's not. A P46 is used when an employee doesn't have a P45. You would have filled one in so your tax code got corrected. This might have caused you to get tax back as it would have been adjusted to your tax code but it's not the usual form to claim back tax.
Which form is it then?![]()
Is your tax code correct? Should probably by 543L.
If you've already overpaid the tax then contact HMRC.
If you haven't overpaid yet but are expecting you will as it's a summer job/weekend job or something where you won't earn more than £5435 between April 08 and March 09 then fill in a p38(s) as someone posted above.
It is for a friend of mine, and it has already been overpaid as her earnings are well below the Personal Allowance, but has been charged tax on all her wages![]()
