Big company crappy laptop

hmmm .... so when she takes the laptop back into the office and plugs it into the network and the rebuild gets her in trouble as the asset management systems sound off about there being an unconfigured device on the network that's missing all their corporate monitoring software, antivirus (*) etc will you be supporting her whilst she looks for a new job?

Indeed. As someone who works in IT, I would go nuts if anyone did that with our builds. We think carefully about what goes on them and what security is also in place.

Seriously, buy your own god damn laptop and give the support guys a break.

Unless your a small company I'm suprised you haven't, energy and H&S are the big issues which get them switched pronto.

Big company ... but whilst some areas seem to get lots of nice new kit others get nothing . We've had some management changes recently so I'll have to try pushing for it again ...

Rhys take a chill pill

and before you know it I've got a brand new HP c2d on its way to me!
The thing is edscdk is that everyone here is just trying to help you. There are a large amount of people here that actually work for corporate IT. If users go around uninstalling the corporate image then you will have no control on the company network. This may result in

1 - malware
2 - copyright infringement
3 - general loss of control of assets.

If I were you Id admit to your girlfriend what you have done. Get her to confess to the IT department and hope that they understand she dates a plonker and resolve the issue.

It seems you are naive and so I forgive you for your attitude.

ps -

its not your laptop or hers its the companies.

chances are, the people who design their standard builds are a lot more knowledgable than you.

also, how do you plan on joining the build you're putting on there to the company's domain?

Oh and how are you then explain the CRIMINAL activity of theft to them?

I'm not allowed to use the language I would like, but I assure you I have utter contempt for you.

I feel so sorry for your girlfriend.

Im sure he has bought a DHCP server off ebay too as his girlfriends company only used 2000 and 2003 is more his style...

This is why Im glad we use encryption software on our laptops that go out that will not allow anyone to format or enter the bios without first entering the admin username and token key. Keeps us safe from muppets like the OP. Regardless, without these measures in place you shouldnt be messing about with a corporate laptop. If it came back to me in a tampered with state I would be going straight to our Head of IT, its just not on.

gees I never realised I posted in the 'Good Corperate Practice and best ideas for things to do at work forum'

I ham up a story a bit to make it more interesting and cause a storm..

they sent 3 faulty machines because they swapped the memory out and never spotted it, I think great I got a nice machine to watch films...

As its rfeally bugging a lot of people, the IT department sent 3 different machines with the same faulty memory installed I was not aloud to replace it (I had to take my working memory out)... no theft has happened..

The machine is a stand alone clean manafacturer build of vista, I used the supplied xp disk to put xp back on with I also installed some free codecs to allow films to be watched on it... all corp access is via citrix, corperate bits are installed from a package supplied on a CD with the PC...

so

1) nothing was stolen
2) It does have the corperate bits on from the install disk
3) Proper sofrware licences are in place

Any complaints now? ok flame me for hamming a story up to make it more interesting..

SOrry rhys if i insulted you.

We make users sign a form before laptops are issued out which state that users must not in anyway tamper with the hardward, install any unauthorised hardware including third party software which the IT department does not approve.

Your lucky you didnt get a disaplinary or even your P45. We have had several members of staff shown the door for tampering with equipment.

The fact of the matter is, a lot of companies, even bigger companies do not buy their own equipment, they are bought on lease, which means in 3 or so years they are returned to the vendor to be replaced. Each division put a capex request in to lease out x amount of laptops at a time, when the people leave, the laptops are returned in that state, and re-issued, if the laptops are found to be of no use (ie faulty) then a replacement is done. If a person leaves, the company is not going to lease out another new laptop if one can be re-used as it is a waste of money and resources.

Yes, you lied and are possibly allowing your GF to get fired.

I'm doing laptop builds at the moment and you would not believe how long it takes to get one in a state that I'm happy with. I'd be very angry if someone decided to undo all of that.

Just out of curiosity since this is a works laptop thread...

Are there any issues with me putting another hard drive and more ram in my fathers work laptop? He has been moaning about a lack of space and slow performance lately, another gig of ram would fix that for him.

Take it I should be getting him to ask permission first?

GSK are dire, got 3 dead lappies here for over a month, they just don't care on the phone.

We're HP here, but I don't like the build quailty of the laptops, the Workstation laptops even at 2k are flimsy, and feel cheap. Dell's feel really well built.

I'd say quite the opposite, I had a precision mobile workstation from Dell last year and it was fairly rubbish compared to my new HP one. Each to their own I guess...

I would, just to cover his bacon.

Explain that you are knowledgable about hardware, if they have their own IT division they will probably ask him to send it back to them.
