Star Trek Online confirmed as PC release!

Get used to it, the days of the huge PC exclusives are rapidly dwindlng...

For MMOs though? I just can't see how a serious MMO, like WoW or EQ2 or EVE can fit in with a console business model. These games have lifespans of longer than a console.

it depends if they're dummed down like Jade Empire for example, then add a multiplayer component on top of it.

Personally I think the arena of the PC will be in the hands of a few master developers like Blizzard, Valve, etc and in the domain of a few genres (MMO, FPS, RPG, RTS)

Guys who produce quality games every generation, who have a loyal fanbase and who are in touch with that fan base. These are the developers that are in it for the long haul.

I don't care if xyz suddenly decide the PC industry isn't profitable because some generic piece of crap they put it together in a year didn't sell well.

I understand what you're saying but what im trying to say is, these things dont exist in the star trek world. The one that we watch, the one that we know. Eve, Tabula and AO didn't have lore which they needed to stay close to. ST does. So if you start introducing stuff like intelligence implants it starts to move away from the original universe and becomes just another rpg replaced with ST graphics and models. It loses authenticity.

Ah, I see what you mean. The only way I could see them doing it realistically is to use a skill based system like the old SWG, so you then link equipment use requirements to skill levels. So you'd need engineering 1 and navigation 1 to pilot a shuttle, Command 4, tactics 4 and diplomacy 4 for a galaxy class, that kind of thing.

Can't see them doing it that way though, skill based systems are not in favour post-WoW :(

I wonder how many more decades people are going to say this. :p

Considering PC gaming has only been it's prime for about 10 years, and the latest gen consoles are now starting to truly rival PC's in terms of basic gaming/media functionality... probably not many. :p

There is a gradual transition going away from PC-only development to cross-platform, and long-term that will include MMO's. It's all about money, and the console market is where the vast majority of money is now to be made. It's only a matter of time imo.

Don't forget how many console games transition to PC too.

Doesn't alter the fact that any MMO designed for a console will need to be significantly dumbed down. Will a dumbed down MMO makes lots of money? I think not. <Insert WoW joke here> :p

TBH, when I started Age Of Conan, a lot of the complaints were centred around the obviously console-optimised controls and interface. I didn't have a problem with it, but many did, and it's an example of something that backs you up.

Let's not forget how people hated the obviously console-ised interface in Oblivion, myself included.

As a trekkie fan, I don't have my hopes high. Hell even as a stargate fan I couldn't give a hoots about Stargate Worlds. MMO's just don't cut it today, they're too dumbed down for the masses.

I don't think in the current climate a consolised MMO will make it big, or more correctly become an awesome and deep gaming experience. MMO-lite is a good term. PC MMO gamers have gotten too used to the depth and functionality a native PC MMO offers. Why would they play a game that has been limited just so the console players aren't dis-advantaged? Look at FFXI, it got badly compromised because it was multi-platform.

Sure, I can see some real die-hard ST fans getting this anyway (just like FFXI) but it will ultimately be a case of playing an inferior/dumbed down game, to what it could have been if PC only. Not that all exclusive PC MMOs are great, like everything some are real turkeys, but it'll never reach its potential.

Maybe the next gen of consoles will cope better but honestly not unless they come bundled with a keyboard & mouse....but then they'd become almost mini PCs, so...

I'm not a console hater btw, I have a 360 and a Wii in my house which I play happily, but when it comes to MMOs, Sims, FPS games...the PC wins hands down. Well, PC exclusive games wins hands down. Not cheap arse console ports :p

look goods (if a tad low res) though i think Eve space looks better. But STO looks like it has space combat, inside ship combat and landing on planet exploration/combat! :)

Heh this does have potential to be quite cool... people manning different stations on a starship and then going to work. Could be fun... but messy.

However i won't rest easy until there is a modern Star Wars game released with DX10 graphics that allows me to pilot a ship in mass combat with the TIE-fighter flight model and physics, with the option for people to crew capital ship turbolasers as the hulking behemoths go along pre-defines flightpaths and circle each-other. Or man stationary turbolasers if you're defending a platform. If FPS style boarding action a'la Battefront II could be added on then great.

Shame it will likely never be released ocnsidering LucasArts are now a pale shadow of their former selves. :(

HERE FREAKIN HERE.
