Have a seagate 100GB external HD, used to work absolutly fine, but its started playing up whilst in use on my desktop.

Cannot have it plugged in long before it starts bleeping, as though not enough power is getting to it, but always works fine on my laptop. Also doesn't always let me safetly remove it, dont like just unplugging it.

Any ideas? I have asked before but didnt get any replies back, dont fancy having to buy another external HD, but i dont understand why it works fine on my laptop but not on my desktop :/

have to use 2 cables for desktop, only 1 in laptop though, have reinstalled the drivers but the gf has been using the HD on laptop all night so ill check it tomorrow :)

ok only just got round to trying the HD, still bleeps when plugged into my desktop and just doesnt like doing anything :(

anymore ideas? pretty sure its not the drivers, as after re-installing them the same thing happens :(

which connectors are you using on the pc? (front usb ports?)

try using the rear ones, failing that, buy a powered usb2 hub for your pc

is it a cheapy enclosure?

I had a similar experience with my Maxtor one touch mini. Worked on one PC connected through a desktop usb hub. Failed (bleeped) when I plugged it into the front ports on my Antec 900 case. I thought the drive had died in transport. However, when I plugged into the back everything was fine.

I don't know if this is something that can be fixed as it's a pain scrabbling round the back of the machine. I'm confused as to why the fronts are different to the back. Memory sticks etc. work fine.

will try the rear USB ports then, front ones seem fine for charging mp3 player, USB mouse etc, but if it work sround back i wont complain :p
