If a gearbox were to....die/explode/cease to function?

It'll probably be okay if you don't drive a like a ****, Jake. Is it making much noise?

What about if it's RR'd? :p

EDIT: Ninja edit there!

Won't know about the noise until tomorrow mate, everyone who looked at it says it looks fine (3 people) and one of those was a specialist. He did say that it'll be best to replace though as it could go 200 miles down the road.

Ah well...300miles round trip to Gloucester...Dad's on standby with a recovery lorry so it'll be fiiinne... :D

Well, as far as I know, nothing. But the driveshaft was pulled from it which could have damaged it inside, hence my question.

I've pulled both of the driveshafts out of my MG ZS when I changed the engine - they are designed to pull out . I don't really see what damage could be done that would require a whole new gearbox. I can see the circlip and oil seal possibly being damaged but this wouldn't require a whole new box. What damage do you think it would have done inside?

Just out of interest, how did they steal your car? Did they steal the keys from your house or somehow "hotwire" it?

At a rough guess, it might have taken quite a knock given that the car lost a halfshaft in its adventure at the hands of a thief. (beaten)

It sounds to me like the wheel has taken a whack from the inside and pulled a driveshaft out, I really don't see what damage this could have done to the gearbox unless you can see physical damage to the casing or the splines on the bit where the driveshaft plugs into, but from the sounds of it there is no visible damage.

The car was doing (I'm told) circa 30 - 40mph when it did it though. Would this have made a difference?

I understand they are designed to pull out but at speed as well? (I'm not sure I'm a n00b)

They are not designed to be pulled out at speed no, but to just assume without any basis that the whole gearbox is terminally damaged from a driveshaft popping out seems a bit strange to me. I've had a driveshaft pop out before (only at about 20mph) and it didn't even cross my mind that there would be any gearbox damage (let alone terminal damage) apart from the oil seal which I checked and was ok.

What I was told was "due to the angle at which it was removed"

Either way the people that looked at it know more than I did so I got another gearbox (which has only done 30k) (half the mileage of the current one) at the same time as everything.

We-e-ell....

Well, if it's properly trashed it'll be making some kind of new noise I'd think. You'll know as soon as you try and drive it if it's not right, I'd have thought.

Meh. At least you've got that recovery to fall back on if it does blow itself to bits!

On the road you take it right up to redline occasionally, the RR day wont put more stress on the car than that would will it?

You canne fool meh! :p

Fair enough, when I take it out tomorrow it'll be abused like a ginger step child (providing all seems well) and we can go from there...

Handy keeping it in the family :p

Thats how you would remove it anyway :p

My CRX VTEC i bought as a donor had a similar phate, sorry fate. Hit a fence and took out most of the right side pulling the inner CV out, (wouldnt happen on other side as there is an intermediate shaft bolted to the block)

It was fine in my car for years after including boost and then when it went in my friends car fine with nitrous. Bearing in mind the PG series is esentially a mirrored CRX VTEC gearbox and the suspension setup is pretty similar it may offer some comfort.
