Well I never! Yorkshire bigger than Wales, nearly the size of Scotland

Well Wales is quite sparsely populated and there is quite a large population of temporary residents so it doesn't suprise me that Yorkshire is bigger.

I thought the went back to the East/West/North separation ages ago? Humberside as an entity doesn't exist any more, even though everyone seems to think it still does.

The East Riding of Yorkshire is now an administritive area. They didn't change the others back. The old West Riding is now split into West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.

Actually - I don't mind really. Means we don't get lumped in with Leeds so much :)

Some real generalisation about Yorkshire in here (well it is OCUK after all)

I have lived in Yorkshire most of my adult life and one thing this place is (if we consider the old Ridings as Yorkshire) is diverse. Where I live is mostly rural with affluent farmers and the largest city is York, however, there is also the large urban areas of Leeds, Wakefield, Donny, Sheffield etc. The dales and moors are great and Whitby is one of the nicest, yet odd, places in the county. I think that is very unfair to make generalisations about the place.

Except for Hull - it is awful.

Never a truer word spoken.

You confused me there. I thought you meant that York was the largest city in Yorkshire. The place is tiny!

Yorkshire has everything. It is God's country (while I'm still living), and actually does have everything :)

Ahh, ok. I'm a born southerner, so my only knowledge of the area is what I've picked up in six years of mooching about here.

Hence my sum total of learning is pretty much "nobody likes Hull."

Sorry, I can see the confusion - yes York is small, I cycle from one side to the other in about 20 mins every day.

Great place with high quality dinning and good pubs though.
