as a 74gb raptor owner (who is about to sell them)

i reckon save your money and get an F1 instead

when the first raptors came out, nothing came close in performance, the newer raptors are still awesome, but the main differences you'll find are multi-user benchmarks (pointless for a home user) and windows boot times

i'm now getting rid of my raid0 raptors and getting either a 640gb wd drive or an F1 640

at the time i bought mine, my 74gb was £200 (and a 160gb normal drive would've been around £100) -basically paying twice as much per Gb

now 1000gb is £85, and 300gb raptor is £200

~works out about 8.5p per Gb in the samsung and 66p per Gb in the raptor, which is almost eight times as much per Gb

and the performance gap is a LOT smaller now than ever

can u tell me why you are getting the 640 (why that size) and are you going to raid 0 them?

is it worth putting them in raid 0?

i'm not going to raid them, because 2x640 is a lot of data to potentially lose (and it's a crazy ammount for a system drive, heck even 320gb is a large ammount)

the 640gb drives have 2x320gb platters (which means they're fast)

That's ~four times the price/GB.

I have a Velociraptor for system and games. Also a Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB for everything else. Although the Velociraptor is faster, i wouldn't say the difference between them is huge.

The noise of the Raptor drives is also really loud. I bought a 300gb one some time ago and it's fast, but it rattles and buzzes something rotten ;)

I'm happy to say that although i can hear my Velociraptor, i wouldn't consider the sound to be at all obtrusive and it's sitting on the desk right next to me in my Antec 1200.
An old Quantum Fireball i once, now that made a horrid din.

Thanks for that. Do you join game servers noticeably quicker than others?

With the benefit of your experience would you recommend the same solution to others?

Without fail i'm always the first one on the server regardless of which game i'm playing.
It's a solution which works for me as i hoped it would. :D

yes, much quicker

i used to love this when i had my dual 74gb raptors, and everyone else was on normal 80gb drives

then they bought in the 'auto restart' thingy in cs, where the round restarts (rendering it pointless :( )
