Vaughan resigns as England captain

Best not to give it to your best bowler/batsman. Think someone like Collingwood, Cook or Strauss should be considered instead of Pietersen whose own form has been patchy in recent times.

The problem is that ideally you want a captain who is guarenteed to play every game at both Test and ODI level. When you look at the England setup there's only so many players who fall into that category.

Collingwood, dunno, need to see if his ton was a revival or just a positive blip.
Strauss didn't really convince me as captain a couple of years back.
Cook just doesn't strike me as captain material, not yet anyway, maybe a few years down the line.

There's not really any names glaring out at me right now, Flintoff has the heart but I'm not sure how well he'd hold up again under the burden of captaincy, he really needs to get back to 100% first.

One a related note, the fact Vaughn is taking a break opens up another spot at the top of the order. I guess the question is whether England bring in another specialist batsman or go for a more rounded approach by including all of Flintoff, Collingwood and Broad..... does look potentially a bit weak in the middleorder though and could prove tiring for those asked to come in shortly after bowling:

Cook
Strauss
Pietersen
Bell
Collingwood
Flintoff
Broad
Ambrose / A.N.Other
Sidebottom
Anderson
Panesaar

How when he isn't good enough to play in 2 out of the 3 forms of the game and still fighing for his place in the remaining 1? Unless we have a split captaincy again.

It isn't ideal to have a split captaincy, but neither is it to promote an inadequate candidate because he plays for all of the sides.

Smith is a born leader, Cook doesn't have that about him. The responsibility would ruin his game. It wasn't so long ago that Strauss was gold, he does have the class to come through a dry-ish spell. Bowlers are notoriously poor captains by and large, and Flintoff is the only one sure of his place next series (if he is fit)!

Seems academic now that Pieterson is certain, but it seems really dire at the top for England currently that they can be bounced into this by the media (although the management has been dire for some considerable time). Pieterson to last two series, anyone?

So KP it is then. Hope he does ok and his batting form doesn't slump. It is exciting in a way to see a new era begin perhaps.

Also Bopara is into the squad now. Where is Shah? I would have him in before Ravi.

It's a dead series, Ravi is (they hope) the future. He also averages 60+ in first class cricket this year (compared to 50 or so for shah).

I think if they had a chance of winning or drawing the series then Shah would be the better choice, but if they want to give Bopara another chance to prove he can be a middle order fixture for years to come this is it.

His bowling is also better than Collingwood's for my money at the moment. Which might matter if they want to play 4 front line bowlers again...

Quite, 5700 runs in test cricket and 18 hundreds, briefly ranked the best batsman in the world, it's easy to forget just how good Vaughan was at times.

Thought this was a nice wee quote from Jonathan Agnew to conclude his TMS blog on Vaughan.

"He also owns the most beautiful extra cover drive in the world which I hope, after a break and a return to form at Yorkshire, we will see again very soon."

There really isn't a ncier sight in cricket than a Vaughan cover drive!

which is why you don't want to burden the captaincy on KP, his game will most likely deteriorate as has so much more on his mind that just his game.

shocked at the tears at the press conference tbh, you'd never see a.border or ponting cry like a little girl ;)
