Career in the Forces? (IT Related)

its sergeant, and its an aptitude test - you may want to google for some, you best check with Zefan what the tests involve, as my naval ones had spelling things on and they will affect what you can go into if you **** it up :)

Damn Firefox!!!

I knew it had a p in it, I just normally right click and don't pay attention can assure you I will be in the tests!

You need to do well on Verbal, Numerical and Electrical Comprehension. The rest don't really matter so much for IT guy :p.

The memory one is a complete ****, there's simply no way you can prepare for it you see as it's on a screen and you don't know how long you're going to get to see each bit for.

He is right, the examples are easier - but not that much easier.

If you skip a question, make sure you keep in line with it when filling out the answers. It's a totally rookie mistake but when you're under pressure like that it's easy to do - I did it and as a result got about a third of the work rate questions wrong. I realised half way through what I'd done but by that point it's too late.

What do you struggle with most of all?

:Edit: Added you to msn.

hah i did that with navy one zefan, but id always had enough time to go back and correct em all and check :) apart from in the mechanical comprehension as my mind had started to wander and i didnt like not knowing the answers :D

The work rate one simply doesn't give you long enough... like 12 seconds per question and it takes 8-10 to do each one :(

Ah well, scored maximum in what I needed to so :D

Some scrote hacked my msn, just emailing them just now to try and get it back :(

Mostly going to struggle with Electrical, expect the diagram bits was always pretty good at that.

Should be ok with Numerical and Verbal.

Also the spatial reasoning looks a pita.

Anywhere you used to practice? Got the hand out just now but thats all.

If you don't mind me asking, one of the questions is where do you wish to be based, I don't really mind tbh. Is there any list of what differences there is between bases?

I was never asked where I'd like to be based, although I can see why they would ask. That'll all be at the interview stage anyhow... I wouldn't worry about that too much yet. For that I'd just do some general research on where the main bases in the UK and overseas are, what their role is and what aircraft/squadrons are stationed there. If you want to go TCW then know where they're based, for instance.

Where you're based will have a huge affect on what job you do, saying "I don't mind" is like saying "I don't care" which they won't like one bit. Well it's ok to say that, but have an idea of where you would like to be so you have something to say apart from "I don't mind", it just screams out that you haven't given it enough thought/research.

:Edit: For electrical, know about the voltage/current/watts equation and what ohms are etc. That's pretty much it.

Don't think its a 'don't care' as such as I don't know the differences between bases yet.

Will read up on it, or dig my old coursework out and read over that. Read it totally wrong anyway on the app, as only had a glance at it and it asks what position I would like to do. Do you know where you will be posted yet, or is that dealt with after training I would assume?

Are you talking about the "Job preference" boxes?

That's where you specify what trade you want to apply for.

You're right, postings are all sorted out after training.

Dont you boys go to an academy or anything to learn your trade?
Im at HMS sultan after iv passed navy basic to learn my trade.

Yeah I'll spend 11-12 months at Cosford, I think it's where pretty much all the technical trades go.

Is anyone here a pilot in the forces?

I was looking at the RAF website and it says you only need 2 A levels but I guess most of the applicants will have degrees and such.

Would love to join up as a Helicopter pilot but currently only have an NC in Civil Engineering so I don't even meet the 180 UCAS points requirements yet, and at 21 I'm guessing I'll be getting on a bit for all the training.

They tell you what you fly after assessing your aptitude, pilots don't get a choice as such.

Not all applicants have degrees, but the sheer amount of competition makes it difficult if you have nothing that makes you stand out.

The age limit for entry as pilot is 23.

pilot - you'll need a pretty 'rich' CV, stuff like voluntary work and what not, extra curricular stuff, most people are dreaming when they see 2 a-levels and think they stand a chance.

You need to be squeeky clean and have a sparkling CV etc. Then you need high aptitude scores, all the eyesight etc, and the thirst and knowledge to pass through selection interviews.
The amount of people iv heard say they wanted to be a pilot whilst sat waiting around in the afco iv been applying through is ridiculous, theres always more after a film like topgun or similar has been on tv recently too.

Yeah I just read it wrong, assuming you passed everything then?

Do you know your start date yet?

Yeah passed everything, waiting to get allocated draft dates. Should be at some point this week according to the Cpl I spoke to on the phone today. I'm hoping to be there by mid September... might be a bit optimistic that though :p

:Edit: Well I say everything, there is a final interview but that's pretty much the same as the first interview. It's purpose is to confirm that you circumstances haven't changed and to clear up any last issues there may be.

Nice one good luck!

Excited?

Am nervous as hell and only just starting to apply! :p

Not really, I'm never nervous until about 5 minutes before an event :p

It goes by really quickly by the way, I applied on June 24th. There've been a couple of weeks of delays due to their system being down and my AFCO being very busy so you can expect it to be quicker than this.
