Has anyone got any bench marks on the new WD RE3 series. Especially interested in 250GB drive. Looking for single and raided performance. It would appear this drive is the same as the Black edition drives except meant for the server enviroment so has a 5 year warranty. Should be quicker than the 640AAKS and 320AAKS as made for performance with faster access times.

I have a buld here with a Single 320GB WD RE3 (edit) in it, I will bench it later after finished installing stuff for customer and all defragged.

Thanks a lot for that Helmutcheese. Do you know whether the 250GB ( WD2502ABYS ) has the same platter density as the the 320GB ( WD3202ABYS ) drive? If so I assume I can expect the same level of performance, or even better if the they produce this drive by short stroking the 320GB?

Found a hd tune of the 2502AYBS on a german site. WOW.

Looks like an excellent drive. High transfer and low access time.

Could you do me one more favour please helmutcheese? I am going to be using these drives for a development oracle rac implementation and write performance is very important. Could you post the write benchmarks? Thanks.

It doesn't matter which you use so long as you only compare to benchmarks done using the same application. Every benchmarking application is going to give different results to others but as shown they both produce the same graph....

Edit: Ah, a helmutcheese post, should have known!

Damn I forgot to log in and seen that lamer "non_Absence_of_Spam" again giving out crap and insulting me.

I AT LEAST helped the guy with a benchmark as promised.

What's the big deal I said HD Tune reads high ?.

How can the results be the compairable if that site used HD-Tune on a 250GB and I used HD-TACH on a 300GB.

If you have nothing to add on the topic that's constructive, simply shut up. ;)

From now on I will make 100% sure I am logged in before opening any Threads so I so I do not read BS from lamers.

What is so special about these WD drives then guys?

No idea m8, I always use RE HDD's as I want no comeback from customers and since they are for designed for Raid use they are supposed to be better built and they have a longer MTBF and warrenty for a few £ more. :)

Hope someone can bench the 250GB as im hoping its a 320GB platter like the 320gb version as the 250gb is around £40, £80 for 2 in raid0 with 5yr warranty = VERY HAPPY ME!!!

@ helmutcheese, please could you run hd tune pro 3.00 so that we can have both graphs for your drive, i'd be very greatful.

Sorry, PC was installed in customers home today, that's hopefully last I see it. :)

Hi Clocka,

Found this hd tach benchmark for 2 * 250GB ( WD2502ABYS ) in a raid 0.

Ticktock, these are good because they have great access times (for 7200rpm drives) have excellent STR see avg 90-94MB/s reads and have 5 year warranties as they as supposed to be enterprise drives (used 24/7). They also seem to scale very well when raided. I suppose thats why they are called RE (Raid edition).

I am still waiting to find write stats. If anyone can help?

that raid graph is crazy!!

Normally when raided drives that get 90-95mb/s read with hdtach get 165-175mb/s when raided, 195mb/s is crazy, literally double the speed!

I just want hdtach + hdtune graphs for both the 320gb and 250gb drive so we can compare. Hopefully a full review too from anandtech or somewhere. The 250GB MAY be faster than the 320GB due to being short stroked, the outside of the platter would likely be made unusable which means the data towards the centre will be faster to access than a full 320gb platter. I'd like 2 of the 320gb's but ocuk's prices are way too high, they are charging £10 more for the 250gb than rivals:(

God you are such a child, even making up names and stories! Just couldn't help but reply eh. ;)

slackworth, any chance in asking WD if these are black drives with 320gb platters but under the RE3 name and obviously enhanced for raid? These are available in 250/320/500gb sizes.
