Lorry Drivers Flashing?

I've noticed HGVs randomly flashing, never understood why though. I think Dangerous' solution sounds fairly accurate.

Random flashing or.... Another of the same squadron on the opposite carriageway ?

I drive for Langdons.. There are a LOT of us on the M5/4 etc.

Most flash each other... I dont return the flash if there is a vehicle close by that may misinterpret the signal.

I put my hand up as our squadron pass by anyway.

I've normally noticed this when cars which are overtaking the truck slowly or are taking their time to pull back in ahead of the lorry, letting the driver know it is safe to pull in again.

I normally don't get this because I try to overtake HGV's swiftly and give a quick touch of the indicator before pulling into lane again.

That gets on my thrups a bit, it's one of the few things bikes have to separate them from cars, and to be more visible, and the more people do it, the more invisible we come :/

I wouldn't say so. Having lights on a bike makes it more visible against background objects, I don't see the importance of making it stand out from other vehicles - both are moving and both shouldn't be pulled out on.

Yeah they're just trying to help.

When a lorry driver is indicating left to come into my lane, I'll flash when his trailer has cleared me.

You go slow enough for a lorry to overtake you?

:p

Aye, when the traffic is crawling:(

I'll do the same when a lorry is wanting to come into the middle lane. Quick flash to say i've noticed him and he's safe to switch lanes. Either that or just move into the 3rd lane, leaving him plenty of room.

now you're being selfish, i dont want to be squashed either you know :p, regardless of my umpteen airbags and crumple zones :p

I just realised who I quoted...I didn't realise...thought it was some slow old person. :p :D

I often hang back if a lorry appears to want to move out, sometimes flash, but it can also give the impression that you are telling them not to (especially if you come up at speed then hang back). I also let them pull in when they want, so far they've never got it short or gotten it at all long. I can see why you do it though, most lorry drivers are decent people and they do drive a HUGE vehicle that they can't see completely. :)

OP: were you on a slight incline? This may annoy an HGV driver who's been accelerating hard for the last 2 miles just to get up the hill ahead:p

Its either:

A flash to let you know you can pull in safely. They get into the habit of letting lorrys and vans know, so just flash everybody.

OR

They are flashing you as you have pulled in a bit to early, and if you had to stop suddenly, youd be squished.

Either way its probubly not aggressive, its either just courtious out of habit, or a casual warning.

I get it sometimes on the bike. Usually on B roads. I have always thought it to be the driver letting me know its safe to pull back into the lane. I always thank them by flicking my indicators or a wave.

I've overtaken a few lorries lately and pulled in front of them to get back in lane (ie: nearside lane), hit a 50 limit where there is roadworks, slowed down and got flashed a few times... I think it's impatience? Sorry but I'm not speeding where there is a high chance of the limit being enforced :D

I don't think they like it when their made to slow down even slightly, even though you should never need to make another car slow down when over taken, as it would take them a fair amount of time to get back to the speed.
