Need to have a safety net for all my pictures and media library. 1TB would be enough for now as all my really old stuff is on DVD.

Don't mind all in one packages or a disk / caddy recommendation.

samsung F1 1tb £87 ish
icybox 390 £20

has usb2 and esata (esata is full speed, usb2 is abotu 30mb/s)

I've made a slight change to the spec. Needs to be a NAS device with FTP and pref IDE/SATA support.

I'll probably get on of the WD devices anyway as you can never have enough backup!

I wouldnt but a USB only device. I've already got an eSATA caddy which is great but would like a NAS device for the FTP functionality.

I've experienced data & partition corruption with various USB enclosures on several computers. Properly disconnected, and data had just gone!

I'd feel much safer buying a HDD myself and separate enclosure than an all-in-one WD Mybook or similar, heard few people have had problems with the pre-built ones just losing data.

If you going for a NAS an have a bit of cash... Synology... i got a DS 207+ got 2 x 500GB Seagates Mirrored

Fast, secure, resiliant, brilliant feature set, well worth the money

the only time i've had problems with usb (besides it's slow speed) was a damaged 5m cable (in my old job) it would disconnect all the time

yea they are pricy & i did ponder over buying one for about a year...

in the end i decided that i wanted something that was gonna look after all my photos and stuff nice and safely, it cost a fair bit, but its worth it for the peace of mind i found
