Gears of War

Can it be as bad a port as Assassin's Creed?

Edit: Which i took back to the stupid shop and demanded a refund. They said they can't take them back after they've been opened, but by god.. they took mine back.

What was bad about assassins creed? i enjoyed it from beginning to end even tho it did get a bit repetitive.

But to OP i agree, i lasted about 10 min on it then uninstalled it.

i got it back in jan and never really got into it but decided to start playing again last week, beat it in 2 days but although it's very samey and all i really enjoyed it, not my type of at all like, going to play it in co-op now with a friend :)

It was a shocking game. You cant invert the mouse, the controls are ludicrous and although can be customised, quite clearly favour a gamepad, it crashed every 20 minutes unless you disable your internet, it ran like a dog even on an awesome PC... it was a completely unfinished, shoddy game. It's unbelivable that we suffer this. You dont go to a restaurant and get served an uncooked meal, you dont go to the cinema and watch "most" of a film, you dont go to a car dealership and buy half a car. Why are games different?

I was tempted to pick up Gears of War with the refund, but im glad i didnt after reading this thread. I got Bioshock instead :/

What aliens would like to do that :P ?

I'm playing it fine with mouse & kb & prefer it above playing it with my ps2 controller, the controls are fine and not too much different from the average TPS)

Hmmmm, that might explain what happened to me before, as when i was stuck w/o net it worked superb... Going to retest it as ive patched to 1.2 since...

Runs fine on my average pc even in dx10 mode...

What?? Rubbish...

Assassins creed isn't, it's fine.

Bioshock is no better, in fact it plays worse imo than AC and GoW...
But guess you don't like console ports, fair enough then...

Gears Of War & Assassins Creed run fine for me no need to disable net access. It auto checks on startup for a newer version but you can just create a shortcut to the main exe to avoid this anyway. Reason they did this was no different to console games where it forces an update check to help people out and prompts for the update.

Both are much better on the PC than consoles and designed around using a 360 gamepad as like most games nowadays they are multiplatform designs as piracy has effectively destroyed PC gaming so all you are likely to get is more multiplatform games.

GOW needs GFWL installed but says that anyway. Its not as good as the reviews claim being just a 3rd person perspective FPS but still a lot of fun and the gfx have a lot of variety in them no 2 worlds are alike. Now MS have made Gold Live access free you also get a much better deal than the 360 version.

I got Gear of War for the PC. Installed it, started the training level.

Got about 5 minutes in, quit, and uninstalled. It's been collecting dust ever since.

Controls are strange, nothing feels right at all. It's one of those games that tries to cover both the FPS and TPS bases at the same time, and instead balls it up completely and fails to even begin to cover either.

Ummm, yes it is.

Congratulations.

yes, that's ok though isnt it? Who cares if a game crashes when it encounters such a HUGE problem, for example, being connected to the internet.... which is obviously SO RARE it doesnt need to be fixed before the game is released to the public.

Runs fine on my average pc even in dx10 mode...

I have no problems with console ports, but i'd appreciate if you could quote the part where i said that so i could edit it out...

Assassin's Creed is a great game, really fun to play, interesting story, and looks great. It runs well on my average system at full settings @ 1680x1050.

It has it's problems though, 8800 users are plagued with nv4_disp.dll BSODs which still hasn't been fixed. Other users are subject to constant crashes because of Ubisoft's anti-DRM stuff connecting to the net during the game.

As an 8800 owner, I've been having a few problems and crashes myself, but the game is so fun that I'm willing to overlook it for now.

Played Assassins Creed from begining to end with the spec in my sig.

It never crashed, the controls are fine, only time i had an issue was when you where too close to two buildings (in an alley way) and the camera jumped about a bit...But that was a camera issue, not control.

Internet issue? Come again? My nets on 24/7, only time i turn my net off, along with my A/V was when i played Crysis, to free up a couple of resources...Works fine with the net enabled when its patched up. Might have been your Anti-Virus or firewall.

As I said at the start, it runs fine, flawlessly infact, I had no slow downs at all, with everything cranked up.

What do you mean by unfinished? It's not buggy, other than a few rag doll effects I noticed.

great game to be hoenst, apart from it did have some repetitive moments :) That and I wish they kept it in the early years, rather than having some plonka going back in time via his DNA :p

Well the above is not my experience of it. The game crashes when it feels like, the combat is very samey, the game notoriously boring. Run to a new city which looks the same as every other one, find the assassins bureau, find a map point, save some peasants, rinse, repeat again for the rest of the game.

Even the story is not that good. I thought it was going to be something special. Sadly I was very wrong on that score.

It's a prime example why console games should stay where they belong. The waving of field of view while running is motion sickness inducing if you sit close to your large monitor. I can see how it would add to fun on large screen in the middle of the room, but on PC it's just puke-a-listic. The 5 ammo reloades per each enemy gun battles are good for Brighton Pier arcade, not PC gaming. Adding the odd aiming process, spray and pray gunfights were by far, the maddest thing I've experienced since that aim-within-aim malarky in ArmA. Novelty of graphics wear out after 10 minutes and you start to notice you spend most of your game watching dirty backside of a chubby character running through the same muddy, grey surroundings. Third Person viewpoint, in my opinion, works only if you're following Lara Croft. Anywhere else, it is so eighties.

Strange as I completed the game on an 8800GTX with no issues whatsoever.

Also it does not have any anti DRM whatsoever. Like all recent Ubisoft games it does an automatic check at startup to see if a newer version is avaialble and thats it. This can easily be bypassed by creating a shortcut to the game exe anyway.

AC is apparently sensitive to overclocked systems as it is a very demanding game so if you have a heavy overclock this can cause some issues.

Well, well done for you. Try looking on the internet for problems regarding assassins creed. I'm really happy that you managed to get it working fine. Honestly i am. But i had issues with it "phoning home" using the internet connection, causing it to crash, when it didnt crash, it BSOD'd on me, and then there's the inherent issues it has when using an 8800GT. And who releases a game without enabling invert mouse options? It's the most basic level of customisation.

I doubt highly that it's my A/V or Firewall, because i have neither.

Th eproblem is specific to the 8800GT.

Also, yes it does. Google Assassin's Creed Phoning Home.

Must be your PC as AC is very stable compared to many other new PC releases. If you have a heavily overclocked system this can cause issues but that is not Ubisofts fault to cater for overclocked PC's is it.

I will admit the game does have a lot of similar gameplay but TBH you can say that about any game in the past 10-15 years they are all very samey in that respect. Yeah the story is nothing special but no better or worse than anything else out there. What AC does have going for it is that its a beautiful looking massive open world you can explore and there are many unique features like free running to escape fights or jumping off tall buildings all seamless as no loading is required to break up the illusion of the open world.
Not any other games around you can do that in which have the same graphical detail as AC.

Just the 8800GT? I have the G92 8800GTS and I'm now in memory block 5 no problems everything fine, as I said in my earlier post, I had problems pre 1.2, but after that it played flawlessly... Played for hours...

As far as i have read it was specific to the 8800GT. I'll try and find the link from when i was looking up the problems i had.

[edit: i'm only quoting what i read in that review, it said the GT only, but the guy earlier said the 8800 series so i dont know the answer now. the review may have been a typo]
