Dirt cheap student car

At the end of the day (cliché alert) - I think spending £500 on a car is fair enough if you only expect it to last you a year at the most without serious problems :) That was what i wanted out of my 1st car and it just about managed it. They are very cheap for a reason ;)

They are cheap because of depreciation, this is due to a number of factors, age, mileage, make, model, desirability....

you can buy a £2k car that could conk out after a year or a £100 car that lasts 5.

do you have a licence? If not then I recommend you get onto it ASAP. I had the same view as you, never needed nor wanted a car at uni, ended up getting my licence at 21. Now I get raped on insurance for nice cars simply because I have not held my licence for long. I would be paying much less now if I had passed at 17, even if I hadn't driven a car at all between then and now.

Is that just because you're under 25? I passed at 25, have had my license less than 2 years and my 4 litre XJS costs £500 a year to insure....what would you consider "rape" in insurance terms?

This will rage on forever until the OP tells us what car he ended up buying. :D

I'm sticking to my guns and saying get the 106..

This comes from someone in the motor trade that has seen a variety of both cars to form a more accurate opinion over someone who happened to buy one and not have it break down on them once in a few years...
It a no brainer when running costs are involved
106 is cheaper to run, cheaper to insure, as cheap to get parts for and is a dam site more reliable than a mondeo.
Generally it doesn't rot away in front of your eyes either. :D

he wanted a similar car to a polo hence why everyone with a mondeo suggests that he gets a mondeo. they are really similar in style, size, running costs!!

He said nothing of the sort - he said he wanted a dirt cheap £500 car and gave an example of two, Golf and Polo. A Golf is nothing like a Polo either.

Mondeos are mid sized family cars, Golfs are large hatchbacks, the difference in length is no more than a foot, but they are very easy to drive and have good visibility. If you wont buy a car as it is 30cm longer you may as well stick to a go kart.

EDIT: the mk2 hatch is probably less than 30cm longer than a golf maybe 15-20cm. but then again a golf isn't in budget so its not an option, most people also mention small cars as they think they will be cheaper, which is like sayign i do a thousand miles a year, ill buy a derv as it has better economy, it doesn't matter that its 10 more a litre and the derv cost £500 more to buy.

Your demonstration of how little you know about anything is getting boring now.

Golfs are hardly small.

What do you drive anyway?

you have been pretty entertaining for me.

i have a cooper, but will be getting a BMW 3 series sometimes this autumn.

How will you cope driving something so enormous as a 3 Series?

i drive a citroen c5 2.2 '08 for work, and also had a 3 series estate last year, that OK for you?
