Swapping PS3 Hard drive ?

<phew>....
All done and dusted now.
Not really as easy as the guides and youtube vids made out, but anyone with half a brain should manage.

Firstly, the 40gb PS3's drive caddy goes straight into the PS3 and not sideways.
Secondly, you need to set yourself up with a temporary account before you reformat the new hdd.
Thirdly, you need to reinstall the latest firmware so make sure you have that handy. Then you can restore your normal account.
Ummm.... fourthly, you need to reactivate your PS3 in account management so you can play all the games you've previously downloaded and restored. (I had to do that twice as it didn't work the 1st time)

Other than that, smooth sailing, apart from the 5 tightest screws I have ever encountered and one I almost stripped :)

Still.... I now have a 250gb PS3 so I don't care ;)

That doesn't seem quite right, I mean I had problems with the backup files but all my user settings and the like were fine, they're also not stored on the hdd, Wait a minute, you've been using "restore" as well as "backup->restore", haven't you ?

Nope.
I was confused when I powered on with the swapped HDD and it wasn't happening the same as all the youtube vids I've seen and walkthroughs I've read.

The PS3 would not boot up and I was not given the option to reformat the HDD until I had done all kinds of nonsense.
I couldn't 'back-up->restore' until after I had got into the XMB with my temporary user account.

Perhaps the 40gb PS3 is a little different ?
After all, the drive orientation was different, maybe other stuff was too ? :)

I have a 40GB model and mine was all done within 10 minutes. Just backed up, swapped, formatted then restored. No issues :)

Hmmmm.... odd !!

Well, at least I don't have to do it again. I'm all warm and snuggly with my 250gb :)

Maybe your PS3 is some kind of mutant freak machine???

I have a 250GB in mine too - loads of room for divx, xvid, games, photos & porn ;)

It's been said te 60gb model runs a little warmer so if you get the kit that allows you to use a 3.5" externally will that make the system a heck of a lot cooler?

I doubt it would make much of a difference, the higher heat output is due to a different manufacturing process being used to make the CPU in the 60gigs (95nm?), the 40gigs use a smaller process which results in a lesser heat output.

from what i read this looked harder than it was. i actually found getting a fat32 formatted hd in vista was the hardest part(easy), as for the screws on the drive being tough mine was a gift when i used the right bit... no hassle in backup, restore. completly straight forward and no temp accounts. cheers for all the info guys :-d

Installed a 320gb drive in my 60gb model today. Wished that I had bothered to read more of the AVforums guide before I got started. For future reference don't bother backing up to the hdd that you intend to install.

I've got a spare 160Gb 3.5" 7200RPM drive, gonna give it a try having it hang out the side as you won't be able to see it due to where my PS3 is located.

Just hope it doesn't **** up stuff due to the faster drive, as I heard that can happen.
