The Case Against ETs visiting Earth

The universe is very old. Look how far we have come as a species in the last 20 years, at the rate of advancement I would say we will be populating other planets in the next 100-200 years. Considering there are loads of planets out there, possibly much older and igniting life much earlier than our species, it is possible for a species to be out there and capable of interstella travel.

Why they would visit us I have no idea. :D

They aren't visiting us they appear to just have a look now and again. If they are thousands of years in advance of us I can't imagine we have much to offer them or talk about. Just a bit like visiting a zoo really.

Planets orbit stars, earth and the sun ring any bells?

Its not known if all stars have planets, or which stars have planets, how many planets are typical, what the distribution is like, if they are all just gas giants, or ice-bodies. It was only a few years ago that the first planet outside the solar system was actually discovered. To date only a few dozen or some such low number have been found. And not enough information exists to show that Our solar system is normal.

Now there is no reason for it to be abnormal, but tahts not evidence. Thats speculation.

Up until a few weeks ago I thought that intelligent life could be abundant in the Universe but not capable of getting here.
After watching this documentary I'm not sure that even primitive life exists anywhere else -

SCIENTIFIC DOCUMENTARY: Earth: The Power of the Planet
On: BBC 2 Midlands (102)
Date: Sunday 3rd August 2008 (Already shown)
Time: 18:00 to 19:00 (1 hour long)

Volcano. Episode 1.
Documentary series. Dr Iain Stewart reveals the role natural forces have played in the creation of the planet Earth, beginning with volcanoes. Although they are destructive, volcanoes were crucial to the development of life on our planet. Iain's journey takes him to Ethiopia to discover lava lakes, to Iceland to scuba dive between continents, and to New Zealand to sample hot springs. But it's not just a holiday for Dr Stewart: he has a serious point to make.
(Stereo, Repeat, Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described)

Possibly they visit to make sure that we are kept in line. Imagine if we created a Nuke that caused a major reaction and imploded the galaxy. Also, the LHC might be of concern.... imagine if we created a black hole or a reaction in that machine that could topple our dimension or local space region, that might pee them off a bit so they will pop down to keep an eye.

Taking us for testing for whatever purposes is probably well and truely milked by now, so keeping an eye is the only reason I can see for them visiting us.

Only if they travel by conventional means, it's rather like someone 200 years ago saying it will take months for a european to reach Australia. They could only ever have come by boat right?

The only problem is, there are rules of physics to be broken,. not the same as simply going faster.

I really dont think we are going to able to travel far in space at all. :\

As far as we know, lightspeed in the in built speed limit of the universe. Breaking that is the only way for us to make contact with anything in the universe..

I really dont think we are going to able to travel far in space at all. :\

See above, I mean we will only populate the moon or mars or similar. We would need to figure out fast as light or faster to benefit from traveling further.

If they could travel at the speed of light (which is impossible) chances are that they are so far away that they will have to travel for thousands of years to reach us.

Don't be silly! Of course we will be able to travel faster than light.

No one thought that we could break the sound barrier, and we did.

People have made light slow down to walking pace using a Bose Einstein Condensate, and have sped light up, getting a photon to travel faster than the theoretical maximum.

We are so insignificant to any race who would have the intelligence to travel to this planet.

Also, this thing of them not communicating with us.. zooming around the sky is probably akin to saying "we're here". If we cannot communicate on their level why would they bother with us?

The theory for me is that any race who's come to Earth and seen us, has seen it all before, among many planets, and 1000's of years ago got over that whole "we've found an alien race" thing. We are just old, uncivilised news to them.

If we found a new type of material on mars, or a source of fuel... that would kick off the real space race. Until we find a benefit from travelling into space, it will be bottom of every government's priority.

You Failz.

Is it not possible that our understanding of physics will simply continue to grow? We are far from knowing anything about the true nature of reality and matter.
