Beijing 2008 Olympiad

Im sorry but he really should have gone for it

great run - but he doesnt have a god given right to be in the same shape again in 4/8 years time

Yeah fine people get sponser money for beating World Records - but at the Olympics is a one or two chance thing (in the final) , MJ's reaction was great though

I guess he could be saving himself for the 4*100 or the 200m, but would it have made that much difference(in the other races) if he had gone for it completely for the whole 100m , Im not sure

He explains after the race, all he was running for was to win the gold medal. When he saw no one even near him there was no reason for him to race any harder. He had no clue he had broken the world record till a whiles later, he didnt even appear bothered that much, because he was just going for the win.

Rowing always cracks me up at the end; compared to most events the competitors always look like they're dying they're so tired.

Is this Olympics better than the last few or is it just me?

Sorry there is no athlete in the world who doesnt want to be immortalised with a W/O Record - the medal in one sense only lasts four years, but a record can last a lot longer

I dont buy that at all

FrankJH vs The World

*gets popcorn*

:p

Im used to it - seems like my opinion doesnt count for anything anywhere

-edit thought "gold medal winner" was the question - laughs - as we have probably only had two or three winning runners in the Olympics in the last 20 years or so (ooohh plus a quartet I think)

Even then depending on the age of whom you were asking, I would still reckon they would say Coe (as he is in the news seemingly daily due to 2012) or Ovett more often than Christie

Maybe they do, but who honestly would go out there and say "I'm gonna break the world record today". I dont think most athletes are arrogant and good enough to believe that they could. Better to be immortalized winning and defeating all others at that time, than try and fail for some probable, impossibile mountain, that someone else will scale a bit later on.

I never suggested that anyone would - all I suggested is that most athletes no matter what would drive for the line completely giving it their all, as they might never get there again (rather than gambling on further paydays by breaking your own wr over and over again)

He did give it his all, all that he needed to. You, nor I dont really know, what athletes would do, especially when there is no one else around them to compete against.

Is that what Bolt is doing, he planned to break the world record and then to keep breaking it for loads of money?

I can see why people would be annoyed with it though, he was way too casual, or as Micheal Johnson said to shutdown before the end of a 100 metres in an Olympic competition is incredible and way cocky. I bet lots of people will be annoyed with the way he won, especially the other athletes. If he is an alien or a drugged up cyborg, he will be exposed, but if not, then he truly is incredible.

In which case you've completely contradicted your argument as Ovett and Coe won their medals well over 20 years ago and people still remember their success :D.

Bolt was simply supreme today, dread to think how fast he could go if he went 100% out for the whole race.

Disappointed for Kelly Sotherton at these games, really thought she would medal. It was by no means a poor performance with 4 PBs but her long jump was poor by her standards and an improved javelin it may have been but still off the pace.. Always been a big fan of hers so I hope she can keep going till London, although at 35 that might be pushing it.
