drink driving limits

I like a drink but want to stay within the legal driving limit ,typically I will have 1.5 units around 5pm ,then drive at 8.30 then have up to 3 units between 9-10.30 and drive again .

Now your suppose to lose 1 unit per hour so I should be fine but after reading about the guy on here that lost his licence after only 3 pints of fosters over 5
hours and lost his licence it seems it not so clear cut .

Just wondered if anyone has considered buying one of these

http://www.ukbreathalysers.com/full_range.htm

have tried the cheap ones which are useless ,the fuel cell ones are the best but £200 (a bit steep) was thinking maybe around the £90 mark .They need to be calibrated every 6 months too ,no idea how you do that .

no lectures about not drinking at all please ;)

I personally would trust my licence to a device that may or may not be faulty.

The only way to be sure you're under the limit is also the cheapest, don't drink.

I suggest you either get a taxi/public transport or get a friend to pick you up. I wouldn't even risk 1 pint when I know I'm going to be driving.

If it's needing calibrated that often then it obviously isn't that accurate to start with or has a fairly high failure rate. You really want to trust your driving license to something like that?

Waste of money.

An idea. Don't drink if your going to drive.

Having an orange, lemonade, appletiser, etc won't make you any less of a man than if you have a fosters.

most sensitive kit needs regular calibration, ideally it should be calibrated before every use.

One unit an hour is a good rule of thumb, but varies greatly depending on body weight and how much other fluids you have taken in to help flush the alcohol through your system. Yes, we have tried the home breathalysers and it is amazing how easy it is to go over the limit.

One problem is the time between the last drink and the time when you leave. That must be at least an hour for the alcohol to work it's way through your system. Drink lots of water to help move it through -- your body rids itself of toxins more quickly when you're properly hydrated.

And that is why that kit is going to be pretty useless ;)

"Occifer thaat carnt be right, my one *hic* says i'm fine".

IIRC the police units have to be calibrated if not every day then every week or so.

I just don't drink if i need to drive. Not worth the risking of screwing my life up and more importantly someone else's over a pint or two.

Technically you should only have one pint of beer , and more and you are beyond the drink driving limit.

It depends how you are working out the units and your body size.

Anything over 4 units before driving (if you're 12-13st) and you're on dodgy ground. A pint of 5% lager can put you close to that.

iirc you can actually buy the same ones the police use, just cant remember where from.

Some bar had one.

I suppose you could ring the polcie say your a land lord and would like a breathalyser to make sure you don't let drunks drive home or something. Find out where to get one :D

Trouble is everyone reacts to alchohol differently.

I know someonme who has been pulled over after having one pint of stella with a meal, and he blew red on the mobile intoximeter the police used. Even the police did not believe you could be over the limit after one pint and a meal, took him to the station and three tests on the Lion meter also proved he was over the legal limit.

I also know of someone else who can drink three pints of red stripe, and will be totally clear on any breath analyzer within half an hour.

The ONLY safe way is too not drink at all, you did not want a lecture, but any thread on this subject is going to lead to a lecture.

You can't expect to post something like this and not get told "don't drink".

Trying to be all clever about it and cover all of your bases with calculating your drinks + units still doesn't mean you're fine to drive.
