Frankly I think we're at least a decade away from a proper Cold War, Russians only recently pumped crazy money into their military and while they are on the up lately with their economy it is still in a fragile state and they wouldn'd throw it all away now.
Then again we'll have China soon as the new threat and new member of the Cold War super powers. I actually believe that there's a bigger chance of Chinese attacking Russia, than Russia attacking the "West". India are on their way up as well so they should make the superpower status in my lifetime.

Of course, but I meant hypothetically, in terms of military capability who would come out on top. Russia obviously have greater number of personnel and vehicles, the UK would have arguably superior equipment and organisation and better trained personnel?
Yeah they would still have a hell of a lot more than us. AFAIK all of a our operational nukes are on subs.

How many of those could they actually deliver on missiles/bombs, and how many are just warheads sat in some warehouse in the urals being tended to by some Russian who still thinks there's a Soviet union?

Russia through greater manufacturing power.
They could beat us through attrition once the navy is gone (or mostly gone) they could sit in Europe and shell our air force into submission, before using their own massive air force to cover a huge amphibious invasion.

Only if the USA government decided that they really needed their bases here or they wanted to attack Russia and wanted a reason to make it politically legitimate. I see no reason to believe they'd go to war with Russia just to protect the UK.

Both times the enemy was being funded trained and supplied by the other superpower.
Gurrilla war in a forigen country is very difficult.

WE don;t stick massive war heads on them though, nor do we kit them out with the max they can carry.
