Just wondering. Ive havent got the money to buy a new car but i still wanna check out what I would like next...

Do any of you randomly go a test drive cars basically just so you can see which one you like best for your next car? or even just for the crack? :p

I would love to but i get the impression that if i turned up aged 17 in my battered old punto i would get laughed out of the showroom. Fox is able to do it as turning up in a well maintained 5 series gives a very good first impression to the salesman.

I do it all the time. My dad's best friend owns a Cadillac and Pontiac dealership which means we get to toy with the hottest rides as they come onto the lot.

i would just get laughed at currently, in a couple years i probably will

I don't see why.

"Hello, I am interested in upgrading to a new car and I would like to test drive XY and Z to see which would be the best for me"

Turn up with a serious and mature attitude rather than jsut "lol, gimmie *** keys plz" and any salesman would be an idiot not to accomodate you.

tbh, I don't but if a new Mini comes along (I.E. When the JCW came a few weeks ago) I have a freind who works for a dealer and I got a chance to drive it :)

Exactly. They don't know if you've just won the lottery or something, so they would be idiots to just laugh you out, they haven't got a lot to lose. Fair enough it isn't very likely but, even if it was only 1 in 1000 this applied to, what harm is done by the salesman being as courteous and accommodating to you as he can?

When i went with my sister for test drives the other day, only the Audi garage asked what car she was currently driving (Ford KA) and he just gave a small laugh and was 100% fine about it.

When i turn 21, i will be going on test drives to hunt my next car down, but atm, they usually have an "at least 21" rule for the good cars

I've not done it for a while, but I've only ever been refused a test drive once and that was because of the insurance policy at that dealership (spoke to somebody I know who works there and he said it was the case, the guy was actually about to take me out and had got the keys and everything before asking my age, just went to a different dealer instead :p)

At 18-19 i drove some fairly nice cars including an Elise 111R, RX8PZ, 3000GT, Wolfrace Focus ST285, Leon Cupra, Honda S2000, Civic Type R......yet to try and blag anything better! M3s are next but they are actually genuine research material and it shouldnt be too difficult, turning up in the 2nd fastest 3 series to drive the fastest :p

Tom.

I only drive cars I am interested in buying for me or my wife really as I don't have time to go joy riding. I tend to get most cars delivered to my house to test drive too! :D

I've thought it a lot, but never actually posted it.....i officially hate you :p

How does the conversation usually go? Is it only dealers you know that do it or have you phoned up random garages and managed it? (getting them to deliver a near supercar to your house for you to hoon about in)

Hmm well im 20 and looking to test drive a BMW Coupe 330Ci is it? cant remember off the top of my head. But its insurance group 17, may be a problem?

Oh well only gotta try i suppose :p

I'm 20 and OWN a group 17 330i :p I drove a few 330Ci's from prestige car dealerships too with no problems at all, but I was turning up in a group 16 V6 mondeo (st as far as they were concerned :p)

Shouldnt be a problem though as long as you act serious and don't ask for a drive straight away, or if you phone and book a test drive in advance it should be all gravy.

Well it's not like I do it each week or month and you do have to have a history or be known to them or live in a known area that fits with their typical territory. I don't have £100K Supercars pitching up each week but I have had a 'few' delivered to test, but nothing supercar. Porsche's, BMW's, Audi's, Mercs and a VW to date, nothing Italian.

If you do buy a few new cars or are know by others (sales people move around) it makes it easier.
