3.5k for a new car

You will do as your told and buy a Mondeo, 2.5 litre with 130k on it ok. Who do you think you are coming on here saying what you want. :D

You are intelligent enough to realise what the point was.

With his current ever so strict criteria he'd reject an 85k mile Focus 1.6 Zetec Climate on a 54 plate but if somebody found a 60k mile Astra 1.4 LS on a 52 plate it'd fit the bill. I don't even think I was particularly rude when I started to try and point this out to him.

For once I don't think the Mondeo brigade were poised ready for action until they were called off by his paddy.

To be honest i don't really get the Focus brigade either. Sure it's not a bad car but I personally don't think it is any better than an Astra, Golf or anything else around it's size.

Not knocking them but I agree at 3.5k you should keep your options more open.

I think it's appreciably better than everything else for the money of its type except the Golf. The Mk4 Astra is a pretty crap car frankly. The Golf is the best built, most solid and best quality feeling car of its type but thats its only strength - it's more expensive to fix, buy, etc etc. The Focus is probably the best all rounder offering a good blend between reliability, build quality (If you can ignore the oddly styled interior) and road manners.

Astra is naff. Xsara used to be a good bet but doesn't really stack up when the budget allows a Focus. 307 is awful. 306 a bit old for this budget.

To be honest though they are all pretty uninspiring to look at. Difficult to get excited about them.

wow i didnt realise they were that cheap fox! What would that make my sisters old shape 54 plate 1.8TDCi ghia worth these days?

EDIT

Suppose the mileage is quite high for a TDCI engine :p
