Some of the opinions in this thread really make me not want to reply as you will all immediately roll out your stereotypical bigotted opinions but WTF.

At 32, I moved to Hong Kong to work. Found that Asian women are in better shape, smell less, don't need to shave their legs, don't get fat immediately after the ceremony and generally tend to stay better looking for much longer. I had an American-Korean girlfriend who was a sports physio, need I say more.

At 34, I got a contract running an out-sourced IT department for Andersen Consulting in Thailand. Discovered that Thai women were even better looking than Chinese and Filipinas. Then I met a 29-year-old divorcee who worked at a golf course in their office and from there I caught "single man's disease" and got married. When the asian tiger economies collapsed, work dried up and I moved back to England.

Ten years later, she's still here with me, we have two gorgeous boys but she still hates it here. Yes, we have invested in rebuilding her (our) house there, yes, I help out financially for her Mum who is in her 70s. There's no state pensions in Thailand and it costs me £50 a month to keep her alive and well.

Through my wife I know many Thai-English couples and many are young guys in their twenties or thirties ranging from architects to plumbers to doctors. Some have been married for decades, some still in the honeymood period. For every case of a Thai bride taking her husband for everything she can get there is a case of an English husband being violent or treating their wives as slaves.

Thai brides are not always ex-prostitutes or mail-order brides and in my wide experience, marry for what they think of as love: a husband with a job, who cares for them, who doesn't mistreat them or shout at them, who doesn't expect to be allowed a mistress, who won't give them AIDS. And they leave their beautiful hot country to come to a cold miserable place where no-one smiles and everyone judges them from behind their lace curtains and stained keyboards.

You'll note I post here using my real name unlike pretty much everyone else so there you have it, fire away from behind your pseudonyms.

I see you're a bit defensive Mike. Entirely understandable.

Your situation is totally different. You met your missus the same way most of is did.....naturally. If you read my previous post in this thread you'll see that a mate of mine is in love with a Philipino bird. She's not even over here yet but he's already hyper defensive because of the general impression of what a western man's relationship with a "generic Asian bird" is.

Shame. I worry it's going to be a self fulfilling preconception. ie. the mistaken
impression will cause a rift and eventually a split.

P.S. Like your style with the username ;)

My advice would be to tune into Big Brother on C4 tonight to get an idea of what your Thai bride might look like after say 5 years of living in this country. At least hiding the cookies to delay the inevitable would be advisable.

=/

My user name is just a unique handle on a forum, as my real name will have many duplicates. Get off your high horse before someone pushes you off.

Yeah! It's a shame that there's this stereotype that some people attach to any far-east asian women who gets married to a westerner.

Twice on this thread I've asked if some of the women mentioned were actually mail-order brides or just normal women, and never got a reply. I hope people see the difference!

^Lol tefal

I love how you accuse us of having stereotypical opinions, then say something like this.

At 32, I moved to Hong Kong to work. Found that Asian women are in better shape, smell less, don't need to shave their legs, don't get fat immediately after the ceremony and generally tend to stay better looking for much longer.

I think there's some confusion here over the use of the term "Thai Bride". Many people here, myself included, use it to refer to your stereotyped money grabbing Thai woman who'll give her love to the the best bet money-wise.

Thing is it's obvious and really shouldn't need saying that all Thai women aren't like this. What this thread is about is the ones who will effectively sell their selves as a Thai Bride; not the ones you court, get to know, love, move in with, then eventually marry.

But it's not obvious - hence the confusion (as you've said...). At the start of this thread I thought everyone was talking about Internet mail order brides. After that things were getting muddled up with wives/girlfriends who just happened to be from Thailand/somewhere close-by.

I must have missed those posts then as I thought we were purely concentrated on the out for money type brides who people either order or old blokes find.

edit:

In fact I just skimmed the thread again now and I don't know where you've got that idea from. People talk about Thai Brides that match stereotypes but no one says all Thai women are like that.

My Brother-in-Law has just married a chinese girl, Jin Yang, or Julie as she goes by. Was an amusing wedding, he's a bit...special. Bit of a geek really but the funny thing is, her family are rather well off, paid for the wedding and wverything. She also managed the vows in English better than he did :p

He's done well for himself, afterall, they actually met on the train and he didn't 'import' her. She's also got a Masters degree in Media or something similar. Was a really weird wedding reception mind, they live in Glasgow, his family are from Hartlepool and her's over from China.

But that's what the general perception is.
