Ever wanted a Mercedes? Well you won't now..

I wonder who in the MB Marketing Dept came up with this one? Must have been some strange looks in that weekly meeting.

As skillful a footballer that he is, i wouldn't have thought his reputation off the field would be something MB would have wanted anywhere near their brand.

I love the look of these current black series and I think that somehow Mercedes have managed to pull it off. When I first saw it I thought - Beast...
However seeing it in an advert with Rooney climbing out of it would probably change my first impression beacause IMO its borderline Halfords!:p

Can see the adverts now "Beauty and The Beast" which is which, you decide!

Aren't Merc's looking more chavvy anyway? I mean, look at that monster housemaster posted a day or two ago. Who would buy that other than a rich chav? Even the new C Class looks chavvy and aggressive.

What is it with Utd players ruining the image of cars.

Wonder how much Suzuki paid Ronaldo to advertise their swift. That paid off. :p

You really are keen to point this one out :p

It's nothing to do with being a football hater at all.

Mercedes is a brand which is supposed (whether or not it does is irrelevent) to stand for quality, prestige and class. It is an upmarket brand.

Your average under 25 footballer stands for being good at playing football but slightly less good at things like not being jailed for assualt, forming sentences in perfect English and being able to not spend all their money on bling. I'm well aware that probably the majority are lovely chaps but when discussing image it doesn't take many to tarnish the image of the rest of them.

Had Mr Rooney's awesome footballing talent not been discovered I somehow doubt he'd have scored 3 Straight A's at A Level and then gone to Oxford, do you?

I cannot see what the latter can bring to the former and thus do not understand this decision by Mercedes.

A partnership with some of Footballs more esteemed gentlemen would perhaps have been more sensible?

You have chip and its on your shoulder, Football is the biggest money earning career in this country for a few young men, you think that footballers have the time to sit down and learn and study, young teenagers who are plying for premiership teams are going hell for leather to make it to the premiership, if they don't make it they have wasted years they could have spent studying rather than playing football

They don't sit around and study ever night they are out playing football practicing, its a win lose situation.

Rooney was being touted as a brilliant talent when I was 16 I remember my mates dad going seeing him in the Everton Reverses he would have been 1 its a big age for footballers its when they get taken on for a contract or let go and the dream of playing football gone at 16 and they have get back to reality.

Absolutely ridiculous

All the guy does is kick a ball around a field and has all this, something is very wrong with football.

Oh and Mercedes - what have you done!?

Probably gonna see chavs stealing merc badges to stick on their chavmobile.

some people just read a few books and have all that...

the bookworms get paid lots because the company they work for makes a lot. just like he does because the company he works for makes a lot

he probably spent more time and effort learning football than somoene would spend studying for those As and at oxford

i still agree he is a chav though

Christ almighty!!!

I have heard of wayne rooney, but know next to nothing about him,
I looked him up on youtube

can barely string a sentence together!!!

You would want someone like pierce brosnan representing Merc, not some footballer chav who can barely speak!!

Merc going downmarket by the sounds of things.

You've got completely the wrong end of the stick and run off with it. I don't have a chip on my shoulder at all - Rooney projects a certain image, whether thats positive or not is a matter of opinion but the thread is whether that image is the right one for Mercedes Benz and it's typical customer demographic. The reasons why Rooney is how is are not relevant.

That they earn a huge amount of money is in no doubt whatsoever. That they appear to possess the IQ of a dung beetle and the personality to match is also self evident.

No one has suggested they they don't have a talent, but many also have a frankly disgusting public image that no right minded prestige car manufacturer would touch with a barge pole.

Amy Winehouse was mentioned and is an excellent example. A very talented woman, but would you want her to represent your company?

Odd by Merc, but I don't really expect a national ad campaign involving Rooney. More likely a few press days a year, and a couple of posters.

It's common knowledge that if a footballer or his wife buys a car, you don't buy it.
Mainly because footballers are all wimps, oh dear i've sprained my ankle I can't continue, get the stretcher.

Depends what the 'Company' in question was selling :p

Agree with Fox on this 100%, Footballers in general but the one in the OP particually have a low IQ and few other skills in life, if he hadn't been found young he would now be working in a chip shop.

Have we all forgotten that Merc's client base has shifted somewhat since they banned the use of quality? It has gone from respectable, upper-working class and middle class customers to smack dealers, thugs, reality TV stars and professional footballers. This is quite a coup for their new target market. And there is nothing wrong with that per se, in this current economic climate, it is the criminals, Jade Goody's and footballers who have the money and lack of intellect to actually buy a Merc. Mercedes have worked this out and simply brought in an ambassador that will sell cars.

Oh, I'm a massive football fan as well before anyone asks.

Who cares who the ambassador is, end of day it's the quality of car. I couldn't care less if a person less known then Rooney was the ambassador. People might think because of his image (which isn't too bad, beside looking like shrek), he'll destory a well known huge multi-million pound car manufacturer. Highly doubt it.

It's for two years anyway, might aswell stick it out.
