Cover songs that actually do the original justice.

I agree with hurt, as with a lot of good covers it's not about playing the same song it's about interpreting it in their own way
I like a lot of me first and the gimme gimme's stuff, and the live lounge covers have produced some real gems

why does everyone bum this song? probably one of the most boring songs ive ever heard

Because it is a good cover, whether you like it or not Johnny Cash took the song and made it quite distinctly his own with emotion and pathos. I personally think it sounds better than the original but you are obviously free not to but for my money it does everything that a cover is supposed to.

The Pogues - And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - never fails to move me.
Japan - Second That Emotion - much better than the original IMO.
The Beat - Tears Of A Clown - Obviously not as good as the original Smokey Robinson version, but sufficiently different to be a cracking version in its own right.

The NIN version is pretty boring but the Johnny Cash version has a lot of meaning to it and generally better :)

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned that Amy Winehouse cover of Amelie or something. Not that I'm a fan of Amy winehouse...

Don't know if this counts and I'm gonna get stick for it but...

Leona Lewis - Run (Snow Patrol) (performed on Radio 1's Live Lounge)

Actually, that's a great call. I'm not a fan of them and even less of a fan of her but she sang that song brilliantly well. It really was a goosesbumps moment and boy, can that girl sing (if it was as 'live' as they claimed).

All along the watchtower.

I also really like the live lounge cover by lily allen of "naive" by the kooks. ******** despise the original, and the band, but the cover is quite nice to listen to in comparison. Not brilliant, but she's made the song her own, and also made it much more listenable :p
