Publishers to fine 25,000 game pirates

Why should I be wasting money on crap games when I can download it and then buy it if it's good, thereby rewarding good developers and not rewarding nasty developers?

I'm all for GOOD games, don't get me wrong, but I don't fancy wasting £100 odd on crap games a year when that can go to much better things.
Ignoring the fact you can get demos for most games and numerous free reviews on the web, reviews in magazines, and countless numbers of opinions of people on forums like this?

If you're wasting £100+ a year on crap games then you're doing it wrong.

You make a very good point! you'd have to be a fool if you buy a crap game after playing the demo, reading the reviews and hearing your peers opinions on a crap game!

Demo means nothing, reviews usually rate good games poorly and bad games well.

Say aoe3, or codename panzers, I loved the demo's and was eager to get stuff unlocked, I tried the full versions and they were ****...

Hmm, the games in between, that I'd like to one day get, but can't because I can't afford it or have better games coming out I may consider obtaining.

sorry but are newsgroups/usenet legal or what? cause saying you are mentioning them on this forum...

Yes of course they are legal, Bittorrent is also legal and just about every other form of P2P is legal, it is the things that the majority of people choose to use them for that is Illegal. Its just like saying are DVD burners Illegal because people can copy/burn DVD's and games with them.

And in no way should they ever be made illegal since they could be used for many legitimate uses aswell, but no company hardly ever uses them for such things, which is a shame.

An example of this was when the Company of Heroes Beta was released Relic gave us 3 choices which was:

-Fileplanet (needed a subscription)
-Bittorrent
-Direct Download

The Fileplanet one was out of the question since I wasn't paying to download a free Beta.
The Direct Download was constantly being hammered meaning it was impossible to even get connected because it kept timing out.
And the Bittorrent option was fantastic because all I needed was the small torrent file and I was away and it had finished downloading 2-3 hours later. Where as with the Direct Download from their website it would have taken me so much longer.

what?

lets get crazy for a second assume that this comment is correct.

You make a post on a forum asking "Is X game any good?"
30 People say "Hell yeah, best FPS I've played in a long time"
iBot says "wtf valve suck big style"

30 unbiased reviews in one thread.

No, an example is they rate the relatively unknown game Port Royale 2 badly, while imo it's an awesome game.

Then they rate Mass Effect on 9/10, but imo it's a poor and boring game.
I have nothing against HL2, it's a great game, but not ''awesome'' as most reviews put it, I consider Far Cry being the better game for example. Or, they rate TF2 lower than HL2, while imo TF2 is much more fun... Or CSS is mostly rated very highly, but imo it's **** compared to other shooters, especially TF2.

Amazing people still argue this.. Pirates will pirate, Legitimate users will purchase. And the demo argument is a little weak, played countless crap demos where the full game was good and vice versa.

This whole trying to justify piracy thing is quite tiring.

What happens when you enjoy certain elements of a game and dislike others? Do you mail a cheque with what you believe the fun was worth?

I imagine a lot of you don't see this as theft (clearly), this is ignorance. Buy the game and if you don't like it; sell it. Take whatever loss you make like an honest citizen should.

It's easy enough to tell which games are the stinkers anyway.

What a load of moneygrabbing *******s.

*Stops buying games by Atari, Codemasters, Reality Pump, Techland and Topware Interactive*

ive never heard of those companies who ive highlighted.
codemasters has always been a top class company in my eyes and i always bought the toca series....was a massive fan up until i played a demo of dirt which really sucked.

tbh i have gone off them though after them joining these Topware Interactive clowns... they cant develop games to save their lives so release their game through p2p only to sue those who download it.

no more buying codies games

Good I really hope all the guilty ones have to pay up.

Sick and tired of hearing about PC gamers who are huge hypocrites.

They brag about how their latest greatest hardware e-peen busting kit costs £££££ and that is their justification to get games for free. Or the other lame excuse is that they would never have bought it anyway after trying their buggy pre-alpha release torrent then slating the game on the web as buggy/unfinished junk etc etc.

There is just no excuse even if a game is poor and you feel its a waste of money then perhaps in future you will remember that or read reviews about it before buying.

People who do pirate get whatever they deserve & at the end of the day the people who do heavily pirate games are the reason why others suffer with stronger DRM & or increased prices or worse of all games become console only.

+1

And that's why i have not bought 2 hyped games like Crysis & Assassins Creed as i wait for reviews & more importantly other players experience with the games before parting with cash & if i buy with out reading up on it first & its crap its my own fault & no excuse to pirate.

@AWPC

They're actually releasing the full game that has been RTM'd. They don't release alphas.

With regards to piracy the most annoying thing about it is the crap it installs on your PC to enforce there anti-piracy measures. By this if you have certain software installed (Alcohol 120% which is perfectly legal) then it wouldn't install properly.

Many people get no-cds because having the disc in the drive is a pain espeically if you want to choose between 4-5 games. Why do consoles not get this? You don't see online activation for there crap yet it is as easy to copy on there.

Reviews as well are very subjective.

Ah right, sorry.. I didn't realize that different people enjoy and rate different games.

I guess that means it's okay for you to download games, whilst I pay for them.

my apologies!

All that will happen is people will go back to the old ways of emails and passing cd's over by hand to each other. It wont stop people downloading games or music or movies, it sure as hell has nothing to do with drug lords ect who are always said to be to blame for people using the internet for illegal stuff.

Maybe a way to go would be to look at why people are happy to do this, download for free instead of paying £29.99 for a new game. Maybe more demos, better games, games that dont need a 75 gig patch the day after they come out in the shops, or god forbid, a game that is fun and interesting to play that has more than 24 hours game play in it.

Instead, all we get are people saying, but they are doing something illegal and then picking on the low people who they know dont stand a chance of defending themselfs and with the fine placed so low, you know what they expect the people targeted to do.

Its a simple and soft solution that greedy people use all the time instead of getting to the root of the issue as they might not like what they find.

Yes i know, the are breaking the law, but maybe if lots of people are breaking it, its time to have a look at why its happening instead of hiding behind the law.

Maybe...

I'd also like to point out that if they're getting court orders for each user's details this is costing them a huge amount of money. I reckon they'll be losing at least £700 on each user that pays up... doesn't sound like such a good idea of theirs any more does it?
