All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

the thing thats great about keane is hes a realist, he is signing players he knows he and sunderland can attract, they cant attract the likes of xabi alonso but he knows that they can attract the quality of malbranque / cisse so what he is doing is buying the best players they can attract and will continue to do so year on year till he can attract the best.

other clubs who go for pie in the sky signings could take a leaf out of keanes book.

Why is there so much talk about top 4 teams in the first its almost boring.

Considering none of the top 4 have bought anyone decent, give it a rest.

Daily Mail going a bit crazy, Apparently Arsenal in for Barry now after a £10mill bid was rejected by Liverpool. They say Alonso had agreed terms with them though!

Pretty disappointed if thats the case.

Can't believe people are writing off Quaresma on the back of a couple of bad performances at the Euro's.

He's never been as good as some would have had you believe, but he's also much better than some people are now giving him credit for. He's a much better winger than any of Liverpool's lot on his worst day.

Had he wanted to play in one of the big 3 leagues he could have done. Had he not have been a **** last summer then he'd be a Liverpool player now. He admitted in a interview that a deal was in place for him to join us but when he spoke with our representitives (probably Rafa), he was told he would have to play in a more disciplined way, which he refused to do because he wanted to 'express himself', so we walked away.

He's an excellent player and i'd love us to sign him but not with an attitude like that.

They wouldn't be able to sign players they couldn't attract, I don't really get what this means? Surely you could say that of every manager?

With the money Keane has spent you'd expect them to finish where he's finished maybe even higher.

Most the people I see praising Keane are Man U fans or Irish, there most be some sort of link! :p

It's probably the way he looked at how Man Utd play Ronaldo in which he is set for the counter attacks and set to express himself, the only way we make Ronaldo play disciplined football is coming back to defend corners against specific teams.

He seems the most likely person to compare himself too with them both being wide players and both being Portuguese, he might have thought 'If Man Utd can play Ronaldo that way I want to play that way too'.

Of course, the biggest mistake he could make is comparing himself to Ronaldo in any way, shape or form :p.

He's signed a lot of the best players in that category though, he's not bought crap, overrated players and spent a fortune on them, nor has he really gambled on any rubbish ones that might be good. Last season he spent a lot of money on players who were good enough to keep them up and with those players he has improved them, especially players like Richardson, who had he remained fit would have had Sunderland a few places higher in the table.

What he hasn't done is gone out and signed players who are probably too good for that club and gone and thrown ridiculous wages at them in order to get them to arrive at the club.

He has bought crap though.

Prica is about to leave them already, Chopra for £5m? Twice as much as Ameobi lol, Gordon for £9m! Decent keeper but not worth that, and loads of other rubbish for 2 and 3 million.

He's spent loads and their team still looks like one that will struggle.

He hasn't signed anyone who is too big for the club is because no-one decent would want to go to Sunderland, hardly the most glamourous club is it?

its fairly obvious what i mean as in the rest of the post yer quoting from, JKeane and sunderland are not wasting there time trying to sign Ronaldinho are they ? they are spending there time signing and pursuing players they know they can attract to there club.

some other clubs and other managers do the opposite

thats garbage, the position keane and sunderland were in at the start of last season was a just promoted relegation candidate.

What they had to do was buy the best of average players that would do enough to keep them up.

Some of those signings worked out, some of them didnt, however as a squad they did the one thing they were put together to do.

This season sunderland are not relegation candidates as much, they stayed up therefore they have been able to attract a better class of player due to this.

Diouf, Malbranque, Chimbonda, Cisse, Tainho are good enough to be starting in any team outside the top 6 so he has improved the squad massively this year.

I ewpect he'll do the same again next summer bring in the best players he can attract based on the position they find themselves in.

The only thing I would say on Keane is that he needs to expand his scouting network. I know he is still a relative new kid on the managerial block but he does seem to look to the Emerald isle for a lot of his signings.

I don't think they are that far away from being a pretty strong and secure mid table side. The last thing they need is getting players in who will bust the wage structure and take them a step past like 'Boro and Newcastle did in the 90's. What they are missing is a half decent centre mid who can play a bit of football or put his foot on it whilst it's all going at a 100mph around him.
