How the hell can I tell if I have a gas leak?

If you smell gas or are worried about gas safety, you can call 0800 111 999 at any time, day or night every day of the year. Your call will not cost you anything. Just pick up the phone, dial the number and you will be put through to a trained operator who will take all the details.

Do it now and step away from the internets. Gas is serious.

^^

Overly fat bird (so things are obscured as it where), roll her in flour and aim for the wet spot.

Just never google image it :(

Tefal you have such a way with words...mine was so more horrific but meaning the same thing lol....thanks for sparing them

I have a carbon monoxide detector, which I just checked and it seems to still have battery...hopefully since it's not alarming that's a good thing :/

A carbon monoxide detector is exactly what it says on the tin.It test's for carbon monoxide. It will not tell you if you have a gas leak.

How did it take this long into the thread for someone to realise this  .

The smell of gas should be pretty distinctive. It doesn't smell exactly like rotten eggs, it's more of a sulphurous smell. As mentioned, a small amount from a gas cooker/hob would be the easy way to compare.

Gas will not usually explode a house in small quantities unless left to leak into an unvented area for some time. It is only explosive at amounts around 5-15% gas in air. Still... if you are in doubt 0800 111 999 is your number because you don't want gas leaking under any circumstances.

That won't tell you if it's a natural gas leak (which has the smell), as it's only designed to detect carbon monoxide from faulty appliances (not burning properly), which is otherwise practically undetectable (colourless, odourless etc).

Well I'm still alive,

Pretty sure it was all the gone off food in the kitchen.

and to the guy that asked about the window in my room, I basically I have a second door in my room, that leads to another room, that has a patio door (which we've perm closed due to the lock not working).

London living :/

Gas doesnt really smell of rotten eggs. Just get to know what it smells like then you will never be in doubt. I know because of all the jokers in school turning the gas taps on in the labs for a few seconds to make a bit of a smell.

As stated, your Carbon Monoxide detector won't go off, unless it's detecting Carbon Monoxide obviously :)

I had ours going off once....Wasn't nice, panicked quite a lot actually...As thing's wern't too good at home and the family member who was in the house at the time wasn't in fit shape anyway. Was getting all the symptoms such as head aches etc.

Luckily only turned out to be the REALLY strong paint remover crap in the bathroom which no one told me about =/ And for some reason the windows where closed! Hah.

But by a multi detector or something, one that does all type of Gas, they better than dying I would say.

No, unfortunately no one has the balls to do that. However, some people used to put bit of paper in the taps to block them, turn them on, let the pressure build up and then the paper fires out
