Starring out swear words.....

Does pre-watershed sitcom friendly equal forum friendly?

Female dog
Donkey / mule

Neither are considered swear words in modern day life for the most part.

Read the thread, there's a fair few posts that explain why they haven't been implemented :)

oops have read further now

can't say I agree with the logic behind it - I'm a member of a few forums where swearing is simply filtered and discouraged - they don't seem to have an issue with it and there are quite a few people here who are more than happy to include starred out swear words fairly frequently all the same. The drawback with this system IMO is that it comes across as a bit too authoritarian for a n00b to be temp banned for say quite innocently including an 'F' in front of *** and assuming that he is abiding by the rules.
Then again they aren't my forums, they are fairly popular regardless and I do find this place to be pretty useful so I'll just shut the **** up now. :)

The f-word that is used in Father Ted has seen me serve a suspension in the past and I'm relatively sure that's been on before the watershed in the past.

Guessing that would apply to the -ark variant as well?

But then all variants of the f-word are harsher than female dog/donkey

Your fatal flaw in your argument is the "assuming that he is abiding by the rules" when, in reality when you sign up to OcUK you're supposed to have read the FAQ and it tells you all you need to know about this matter in there.

It doesn't go as in-depth as what has been covered in this thread, but a little common-sense would surely have prevailed :)

edit: I agree OcUK is a lot harsher than, I'd say 80-90% of the forums out there when it comes to matters like this though. IMO it doesn't bother me though.

Hmm £15,000 + eh?

Seems too steep to me unless its on a very fast connection.

I used to work for a company that had traffic of around 900Gb per month and it cost less than £3000!

Oh well.

Well like I said, it entirely depends on what sort of hosting your dealing with.

We're paying through the teeth for our servers for our company in Telehouse in London that's sat on a 100mb line (I believe), not to mention the leased lines and stuff we've got setup in our offices.

The more you pay, the better service you get.

Heck, OcUK is never down*... they can't be doing much wrong ;)

anymore... the forums used to be on and off a fair bit a few years ago

In the last thread about what you could get away with I got told off by Gilly for putting the word "mother" before one of those. I've seen it used since by other people more than a few times without any censorship, so just goes to show when it comes down to it it depends entirely on the attitude of the don at the time.

Yea Bubo,
I am sorry I missed your post (seeing it was on the first page and you quoted me).

Maybe it is down to the context in which the word is used ( which I mentioned in a post I made in this thread after the one you quoted me on).

I am sure most of the moderators don't give a damn on a personal level about swearing, it's just their job to enforce the rules.

But I agree there should be consistency when enforcing the rules.

There is, indeed, context to take into account.

I can't believe so many people are still struggling over what is essentially a very, very easy rule to abide by. It is simply laid out in the FAQ and you see plenty of other people following those rules or getting suspended for not doing so.

The forums are linked to a shop. The shop doesn't want swearing all over the forums. Nor do I and many others here.

We're pretty happy with how things work, and although we patently do take the thoughts and opinions of our member base into account, we won't entertain the idea of the swear filter.

People who say that there are other words you can use (instead of cussing) are missing the entire point of swearing in the first place.

But in all fairness there is no point ins swearing as all it's for is effect, which often doesn't come across properly on a forum, the same as sarcasm, often people don't grasp what's happening. :)

I'd quite like to see auto filtering that replaces swear words with humorous alternatives. For example the four letter word for doing the nasty could be replaced with "gently caress".

I can't remember what site I saw that on before.

I agree. I can't swear at work, especially to customers / employees but I seem to manage just fine - why people can't do that on here is beyond me.

Agreed...

I don't swear much in real life - (don't really see the point) or online. There (to me at least) isn't much of any excuse for swearing when typing especially, because as the words are coming up on screen you should be reading them and realize "oh noes! I just gone and used a swear word... delete delete... delete.."...

Then again, just my opinion and all.

*edit*

upon reading a few replies -

I didn't realize how much cash Spie (and OCUK) spend on the forum

As for the swear filter, it can be got around easily. People will add spaces between letters, use numbers symbols or whatever. It's like in wow, mature language filter is enabled b default view... So rather than people swearing as normal, so it comes out as £$"£$% to people who have the filter enabled, and those that don't it appears as normal, they actually try to bypass it. Better still to have a blanket rule in place. It's like the competitor thing really.

I don't see how people have a difficult time from saying "hey look, I got the new ATI radeon 490808 from Uncle Bobs super l337 store".*

Disclaimer, Uncle Bobs store is not real.

How come people can say bitch, yet can't say a synnonym for "fap" that beings with W, or another word for pee ?

As has been said it does depend largely on context, something that a word filter won't understand.

For example I (and I suspect most of the other mods) have no problem with a female dog being described as a bitch (as that is the right term), when used in the correct context, but I would probably take action if the same word was used indiscriminately or to describe a person (where it's an insult, or just another swear word).

As has already been said, when it comes to the swear filter and harsher swearing people will just (in my experience) try to get round it, and it can/does cause problems for other things at time.
Hence we make it very clear we don't want swearing.

Personally I try not to swear too much in RL*, let alone on forums** where it's going to be semi permanent, as I tend to reserve it for when i'm really annoyed or similar as spur of the moment (rather than the time it takes me to type it in, and reread it) ;), and there are far better ways to show annoyance, or emphasise something in the written word if you've got a half decent vocabulary ;)
It's one of my pet hates, how some people will swear constantly and loudly even in public.

As to hosting costs, i'm not going to say how much Spie spends on the forums, or quite what the package has in terms of hardware and support (from what I know).
But I will say you do get what you pay for - and having seen another forum where they relied on one company for hosting and another for backups (presumably to save money), and what happened there, I can very much appreciate how important good hosting is, and why people will spend more on it than the cheapest consumer package.

*About the only time I tend to swear a lot if when i'm in private with friends and we're playing games, where we can't be overheard

**Even on one forum I visit where swearing is allowed it's unusual for me to use more than a very mild one (such as hell)
