Best Mp3 playing software?

I use WMP11 because I haven't found a player which can deal with huge libraries with no slowdown (Winamp etc crashed a lot) and WMP11's folder monitoring is second to none.

How bigs yer library???... My 56Gb of music (about 11,000 songs) is very quick and easy to navigate in Winamp?!?!?... Never had it crash on me!.. I'm running 'Big Bento' with Album Art switched on too!!..

Right been dying to say this since i've been sused for stupid reasons :p

But you're all wrong. MediaMonkey is by far and wide the best out there. It essentially a much better version of winamp.

Winamp = great in the 90's it never really moved on
Foobar = Great lightweight player but hard to actually do what you want it to do (i use it as my default player opening mp3's from shell)
iTunes = Utter crap, but if you're uselss and have an iPod and don't seem to be able to use anything else it does play music, it works to some extent but its backwards in the way it works and its obviously compatible with an iPod.
WMP = Pretty useless itself, horrible at doing anything other than really just playing music.
Songbrid = Looks promising, but still lacking in functionality, i do like it though :)
MediaMonkey = Awesome, does everything you will ever want with you're music, its very very intelligent, it can use extensions like firefox so the worlds your oyster with ideas. It's not the fastest thing in the world i'll give you that, but i use it for everything jukebox related rather than speed of loading up (i use foobar for individual files).

Pair this with MusicBrainz and you'll ever look back :)

Just trying mediamonkey and it's not loading up on xp whats all that about ?
okay this worked renaming C:\Program Files\MediaMonkey\Plugins, rename d_iphone.dll to off.d_iphone.dll, then start MM.
great app actually will give this a whirl may take this over winamp if I don't get issues with ipod.

Odd that it doesn't load up, since it went version 3 stable i've not had any problems, not really had to fart around, until i started installing loads of extensions and faffing them all up :p.

What do you think is missing?

The extensibility, or at least community that MediaMonkey has to offer with regard to scripting extensions.

For me i can put together an on the fly now playing playlist in many different forms in under 10 seconds each time, with music i KNOW i will like. I KNOW for a fact i can't do this within songbird.

Few little examples. I hear a song and think wow havent listened to that artist in a while. I open MediaMonkey (tbh it's nearly always running in the background for me) choose the artist, now i can hit top tracks and have the artists top 10 tracks (according to last.fm) added to my playlist, without me having to worry about the 6 albums i own etc... Or if i think ohhh i like this artist what else have i got like this. Hit similar artists and i've got a playlist full of artists who have a similar thing going on.

Or if i want some chillout music i one it again type chillout into my tag section, or relaxed or try different things. Instantly i've got the tracks tagged whatever according to last.fm.

I've got an autoDJ powered by last.fm similar tracks too so works like itunes and others but instead of using totally random tracks you seed it with what you want, like a dance/indie/club track etc... and it roughly carries on from there evolving slowly on a per track basis.

Thats a few reason why i use mediamonkey :) I can't be bothered going into everything, just trust me try it out (properly) use the scripts and the forum etc... Get it all working, once you've got it sorted you'll never go back. Promise ;)

I'm still trying to get into MediaMonkey. Looks great on paper but its so goddamn slow to startup [even when registered ;)]. I guess a lot of people will let it sit in the tray so this slow startup won't be an issue, but I won't let anything loiter like that. I'll just keep playing my music direct from the folder I guess.

Yeah i agree it definitely isnt the quickest, i know that. I even say that. I leave it minimised all the time playing music so i don't care. I have foobar set as my default player for music. So if i want to load something quickly from the explorer shell foobar loads lightening.

It's large plus WMP11 has the best auto folder monitoring/library management on a networked drive I have used.

I have tried a few but I always go back to WMP11.

MediaMonkey uses SQLLite so its designed with scalability in mind, i've got 12k+ tracks according to MM and although it can be a ever so slightly slow to refresh occasionally thats because MM is possibly a little bloated after i've installed a million things, as i'd rather have it do everything for me than nothing but be quick.

If it's slow to start up do what i posted above rename the iphone dll, mine starts up as fast as winamp after i did the dll name change.

Foobar is shocking for usability, half the plugins aren't even compatible with the new version.

Half the skins I try don't work correctly - I love light weight and heavy customisable software, such as MirandaIM, but Foobar is just ridiculous.

I use iTunes, but a modified install without QuickTime as I use QTA.

Providing you actually look which version the plugins and skins are for, everything works fine. It was never designed to be as simple as "i want that skin", as it allows full customization.

Songbird is such a slog to use, unless things have perked up in the last few releases. Just felt sluggish, bloated, and was really, really ugly.

I use Winamp. I tried to use Foobar as you can make it look so nice, but even after following a guide it didn't work properly :(

On a related note, can anyone reccomend a Winamp skin which shows the album art? Oh and I don't want to use the default skin.

I love Winamp now, never used to like it but it really has changed since I last had it.

This is my current setup for Winamp.

Edit: Just noticed I have to get rid of some crap, particularly Children of Bodom and Cradle of Filth. :p

But it spends most of its time minimised to the tray with this (CD Art Display!) on the Desktop..

:cool::cool:

I'm probly one of the few that (back in the Version 2 times) actually paid the £10 for Winamp Pro!... Faster ripping better functionality etc... I think its a great program!... coupled with mlipod.dll (for me Nano 3g) its all I need!!!..
