I know a few of you have asked questions about, have been tempted by and have recently bought Boxsters so thought this may be of interest as it will for anyone considering a Porsche.

New rules as of 1st October 2008 for OPC Warranties

1. Porsche warranty will be available for renewal only with a 111 point inspection.

2. Renewal costs will be split by model 911/Cayman & Boxster/Cayenne

3.Renewal cost for 911 will be £1350 per annum including 111 pointer plus any work that needs doing.

4. Those wishing to purchase a fresh warranty (i.e not a renewal) will have to have the 111 point inspection as before, and the purchase cost will be £1450 per annum.

5. You must have owned the car for 90 days (to prevent indy's selling cars with the official warranty).

This means the risk of buying a car without a Warranty has increased as you will have to run the car for 90 days before you can stick an official warranty on it.

I wonder why Porsche are doing this, are they joining the BMW school of shooting yourself in the foot warranty wise? The Porsche warranty offer has always be superb.

Cue people not wanting to buy cars that have no warranty, or that have less than 90 days remaining on the current one? :(

See point 5 in the main and also because the 111 point check is not that great at spotting big stuff about to go wrong.

Having a warranty already is fine, thats simply a case of transferring it to the new owner a work of moments. This is more for cars that currently don't have an official warranty.

In all fairness, is there that much that can go wrong on a boxster?

£1k odd does seem very high for a warranty.

Porsche owners are lucky as there are some really good independents out there who will look after you but there are also a number of cowboys too. I would want the comfort of an OPC Warranty (still not perfect mind!) on anything with a big sticker price but may consider a good indi on anything less valuable. I wouldn't take a GT of any form without a full OPC Warranty though the early MK1 996's are about to fall outside of the OPC limits anyway, so your forced.

The Boxters seem to suffer from quite a few issues, after looking at the buyer's guide, yes.

Probably no more than any other equivalent, mind - although due to their layout I expect labour charges are a lot more.

I wouldn't want to work on one.....

Plenty.

Blown engine
Gearbox
Internals

All big money to fix.
Crikey, are the engines and gearboxes that poor?

It's the same as saying the gearbox, engine and internals on a corolla are big money to fix, but in reality they rarely go wrong, aren't porsche generally reliable?

While on the subject of failures on high end cars, haven't several celebrities complained about how unreliable Ferraris are? (Michael Winner being one IIRC).

It is relative. Buy a £50K car expect £50K car warranty prices. Cut corners or take a risk and prepare for big bills if its does go wrong. Its always a judgement call and no, they are mainly reliable like most cars.

Three points of fail, 1 Italian 2 Highly Stressed 3 Can't see Michael Winner knowing that much about cars. oh and 4 he's a prat.

Ferraris are much more expensive to run than Porsches. They have silly service intervals and MASSIVE costs when they go wrong, even on small items.

Least it's not as bad as a Lambo, didn't the Evo long termer LP640 have a smashed wing mirror after a minor garage reversing error?

I think it cost something like £1600 for the mirror alone! :o

Arse, quite an increase. Was looking at 911s with warrantys but may have to do some recalculations! On the flip side, prices will probably drop a bit more because of this.
