I can't think of any cooler car for a young bloke looking to spend around 3k than a Mk1 GTI cabrio.

I do love the fact old crap is 'interesting'. I bet in 20 years time you'll be posting 'Get something interesting' and linking to a Mk5 Golf diesel or something.

No worries mate. Just adding something different to the pot.Bug One: I really like some of the cars you've posted (read the MK1 Golf) but I'm really trying to be more practical than that. It would be a laugh owning one but an old convertible will just cost too much in the long run surely?
As for the suggesstions for the focus and the mondeo, I do like them both but the golf simply looks a lot better and I've rather own a VW Hatchback than a Ford saloon anyday. I realise I might get more power or a better interior if I went for a Ford but I can't imagine there's a huge difference.

It was the bestest car in the entire world, ever, and really, everyone else should have the same car as well because it was amazing.
Or at least thats what I thought at the time![]()

Its true, this whole VW bulletproof thing is BS, mine has cost more than i'd like to keep on the road.
At least if anyone else I know goes for a Golf I'll be able to help out with checking it over now!Ditto. Which is why I mentioned being super anal about checking everything over properly when buying and checking all the service history properly to make sure all the common stuff has been sorted. At least if anyone else I know goes for a Golf I'll be able to help out with checking it over now!

It wouldn't be so bad but since the golf is now a cheap car to buy people expect focus priced running costs, it simply doesn't happen since you still have the VW % on any parts.
That said i would still be deciding between the focus or mondeo, not a golf.

Before listening to anything Janesy says please consider the fact he bought a 1.3 litre Ford Escort.
Try and get a Zetec, LX's have rubbish seats and soft suspension. the zetec is better speced and has a nice ride. Nothing major to look out for apart from the usual rust and favor FSH over milage
