Spec me a 3k car (Golf, Focus etc)

Actually the suspension is very robust and cheap to fix, its a bit of a myth that it costs a fortune. The spheres are £20 a corner. I doubt you can get a regular shock/spring for £20 let alone self levelling height adjustable ones ;)

I can't think of any cooler car for a young bloke looking to spend around 3k than a Mk1 GTI cabrio.

Cool? How is driving around in a 20 year old banger that looks like a pram....cool?

In any event, most people buys cars based on how well they drive, and a Mk1 Golf is simply an anachronistic piece of junk clogging up the roads.

Bug One: I really like some of the cars you've posted (read the MK1 Golf) but I'm really trying to be more practical than that. It would be a laugh owning one but an old convertible will just cost too much in the long run surely?

As for the suggesstions for the focus and the mondeo, I do like them both but the golf simply looks a lot better and I've rather own a VW Hatchback than a Ford saloon anyday. I realise I might get more power or a better interior if I went for a Ford but I can't imagine there's a huge difference.

Great, a load of old bangers, cracking first cars. Do you really think the sort of person who has decided he wants to spend £3k on a hatchback is REALLY going to want any of the junk you've just posted?

I do love the fact old crap is 'interesting'. I bet in 20 years time you'll be posting 'Get something interesting' and linking to a Mk5 Golf diesel or something.
You do make me laugh sometimes :D

It's probbably second to this. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12226697&postcount=50

No worries mate. Just adding something different to the pot.

The golf, focus, mondeo. They're all good, well built cars. The only difference you're going to find is how they've been treated. You could get any one of them and have years of reliable, enjoyable motoring. Or you could be unlucky and pick up something that is about to die and cost you a fortune in repair bills.

Citroen Xantia TD.

It was the bestest car in the entire world, ever, and really, everyone else should have the same car as well because it was amazing.

Or at least thats what I thought at the time :D

Seems this bit never changes but the model of car does :p

I'd have thought a Mk4(?) 1.8(T?) GTI for 3K would be a bit tatty, unless it's a stressed sale?

Watch out on the Mk4 Golfs if this is what you're looking at, they have a long list of common problems. You have to be super thorough in checking that absolutely everything works when you go to view :)

I'm a bit bored with mine at the moment, but saying that, it's not a chore to drive, has a bit of pull and is still quite enjoyable around the countryside :)

If you like the look of them and aren't bothered about performance, give the 1.6 a test drive but test drive other cars as well before taking the plunge. At the end of the day, not everyone likes the look of the Focus/Mondeo etc and if everyone got the same thing, it'd be boring. :D

My first car definitely wasn't quick, but when you're starting out, I don't think you need something that encourages you to try to drive beyond your abilities tbh.

Nobody has suggested a Ford Saloon - they are hatchbacks. The problem with the Golf is the 1.4 and 1.6 is not a reliable car and is going to cost you money just to keep it on the road.

Its true, this whole VW bulletproof thing is BS, mine has cost more than i'd like to keep on the road.

Ditto. Which is why I mentioned being super anal about checking everything over properly when buying and checking all the service history properly to make sure all the common stuff has been sorted. ;) At least if anyone else I know goes for a Golf I'll be able to help out with checking it over now!

Deffo, did seem to help me however, mine was a two owner car serviced at the same VW garage its whole life with a full VW service history, Ze Germans are deffo out to get us!

If your 1.6/1.4 gearbox is going to disintegrate on you its going to do regardless of full VW history.

About a grand to replace as well it seems, at least judging from my mate's 52 plate TDI gearbox woes. Perhaps a smidgeon cheaper on the 1.4/1.6?

It wouldn't be so bad but since the golf is now a cheap car to buy people expect focus priced running costs, it simply doesn't happen since you still have the VW % on any parts.

If it was me i'd get a secondhand box recon and fit it myself should save loads of cash but people who are willing to take this job on themselves are limited.

I dunno in my experience that hasn't been the case. GSF are giving parts away these days.

That said i would still be deciding between the focus or mondeo, not a golf.

The MK2 golf was the last of the ultra relaible small VW hatchback, people seem to put VW on a golden platter dispite the fact that the MK4 looks tired and has reliabilty issues.

Definately worth looking at a Mondeo, who cares about the extra space - you get that free so if you dont want it you've not paid for it. It'll be better built, better specified, a more modern design, and just.. better at everything other than handling.

Before listening to anything Janesy says please consider the fact he bought a 1.3 litre Ford Escort.

Don't worry, after checking the insurance a little bit i might end up with something less than a 1.3 Escort...

My brothers never had any issues with his mk4 1.6 golf.. Other than normal services, tires some new pads and some new discs..

Nothing wrong with buying unusual cars like Bug one suggested.. It just depends what floats your boat. As fox said he hates small hatchs without technology so hes obviously not exactly going to suggest the OP buys one.

Try and get a Zetec, LX's have rubbish seats and soft suspension. the zetec is better speced and has a nice ride. Nothing major to look out for apart from the usual rust and favor FSH over milage

Huh? Drove a Zetec for months before i bought a 1.6 LX a while back. The Zetec was a 03 and the LX i got is a 52 plate 02. Seats were the exact same if i remember right and the LX to me has a better daily ride, little more roll and thats all, zetec was lower and handled slightly better on corners but i definetly felt the bumps more in it. the LX was actually a good spec with standard climate pack (heated windows/aircon) while the Zetec has that as extra (of that era). Have you driven/owned any?

not dissing Golfs, but i've got 2 friends who've had nothing but issue after issue with theirs, one mate having O2 sensors going monthly, engine cut outs after 3000rpm which is still indiagnosed, floods during rain etc.. the other has a constant issue with his transmission (auto) where it lurches and bumps even after a rebuild and bits falling off the interior.

What about a Rover 200 Vi, or if you can hack the red seats a Rover 200 BRM? ;)

Or if the insurance is a little high on those why not just a standard Rover 200? It's my first car and I actually rather like it :)

*awaits typical Rover comments*
