Nikon D90

Occasionally focus lock is useful. Sometimes the AF will try to focus on the wrong focus region depending on your mode it is sometimes nice to force the region to be what you want, instead of composing for the focus, pressing focus lock through the trigger, and then recomposing. I believe this only happens in some of the auto-modes like portrait or something. Not used the function for years though.

nikon really are showing canon a thing or two lately

Really? From the spec the 50D seems better. We'll need to wait for proper reviews but I have a suspicion that the new sensor design in the 50D coupled with DIGICIV will produce very clean images.

Movie mode on this is suspect will be little more than a gimmick. GPS is nice but it's hardly going to improve IQ. As a competitor to the 450D it's quite good but the 50D spec wise is much better. The 50D is slightly more expensive but after a few months prices should settle down. The current launch prices of both cameras are no indicator of what the price will really be.

aimed at different markets I would say with the D90 (rrp £699) under the 50D (preorder £1199) although of course we will have to see where the street prices settle.
Compare it to a 450D (srp £600) though ...

seems (subject to reviews) a pretty impressive camera for the money though.

i would still prefer to have a d300 over the 50d any day though, and now that the d700 is out and the d90 is on its way hopefully the d300 might drop abit in price

But we havn't seen any proper reviews of the 50D yet. That's a baseless statement to make. I've already stated that the 50D has the potential to have incredible IQ but we'll have to wait and see.

I really cant see this movie mode been any good in a dslr at present

Its going to require use of the sensor (ultimate run down of the battery)
It will have to rely on a "live view" like AF system (given that movies most of the time will be shot constantly moving around, couple with with people wanting to throw a background into constant bokeh your playing with a very tight focal plane..

Really don't have high hopes for this.

doh

I was just thinking about trading in my d70 and getting a D80 but now a d90 seems a better option (when will this hobby ever stop draining my wallet)

At first I thought the movie aspect was just a gimmick, but actually I can envisage a few occasions where it might prove useful. But they will need to work out how to get AF at the same time as having the mirror locked up to make it properly useful. Interesting times ahead I think.

No Af is not important though. High end video camera are always used in manual focus, only low end cameras have AF. Any SF system in high end video camera never work since often you will be attaching 35mm lenses through some converter.

I thik the video mode would be cool. The quality should be amazing- the sensor size is bigger than hollywood camera sensors.... Finally amatures can have low DOF with amazing IQ. Imagine filming through an 85 f1.4 lens. or a 300 2.8. Or shooting Macro close ups at 1:1 of insects with super crisp quality. Of going super wide with the sigma 10-20, or 10.5 fisheye.

Be aware that it can only record 5 minutes of HD footage and also has no AF in movie mode. It would be kind of cool to record some insect macros though.

These limitations (with video) will gone in other manufacturers models that follow I'm sure:-
- No autofocus
- 5 min limit
- Mono sound
