Quick sub £1500 car?

I always fancied a 309 GTI, but surely the chances of finding a good one are none to slim?

Not mad on Volvo 480s - friend of mine had one and just didn't do anything for me.

Would love an MR2 turbo, but would definitely be more than my budget for one that isn't going to blow up 24 million times.
 
You want sub 8 secs to 60. I'd go for the Rover Coupe 218 VVC.

If you're looking for nearer 6 to 60 then the Fiat Coupe 20v turbo. But then if insurance is an issue, they're group 19.

Hes back in a rover now, a 620 turbo thingy i think?

I used to see him a bit, he hung about with my Brother a lot. Had a few rides in his 220 at various stages of tune :p

He has always been called Pastie by us lot!
 
Its not been mentioned yet but a (tatty) honda crx i-vt would really fit the bill, 0-60 around 7-7.5s 1.6 litre engine, really really great fun ;)

Mine cracked sometime back, but I was fully expecting it to after MIGing it back together during the rebuild! Picked up a perfect, uncracked s/h one for £80 so not too bad.

It's not really a car for budget performance though, at least not if you want budget performance for any length of time. The manifold cracking is really one of the more minor issues, if you can live with the ticking noise for a few minutes after the car is started it doesn't really affect performance. I'm finding the main consumables are front wishbones, front tyres and fuel. That said I've been getting a steady 28-29mpg on my commute which I'm quite pleased with.

A friend of mine picked up an L reg 16v Clio for £200 to use in 12 car events. Apart from the dire interior (really quite awful, probably one of the worst French car's I've been in), it goes and handles extremely well.

I was quite tempted to get one myself as it was so much fun, but even though I'm far from an interior whore I'm not sure I could live with it.
 
Clio 16v is something I'd never actually thought of - how much for a good one?

The interior is awful, but I have a company car for everyday...

they do handle and go pretty well! Nice revvy engines too.

Yep the interior is pretty bad but quite comfy. It has all the oil pressure, temp gauges etc though... it's functional, not pretty :D

comitted they range from 800-1500+ for a decent one imo, watch for the arches, the engines are pretty good though.

The interior isnt that bad :p Its dated but they have quite a bit of kit for there age depending on phase..

Good ones go for £600 to £1200 now. The downfalls are... body work (rust -rear arches, sills, bottom of the doors, tailgate around the lock) and weak gearboxs. Mines been reliable now that i replaced most things :D and ive never had any electrical problems either with mine
