Depressing GCSE results?

Why did you get all C's?

I worked to the best of my ability at that time and i got a few Bs and Cs. To achieve SIX As and even an A* is extremely impressive yet somehow that doesn't seem enough almost to the point the OP considers it 'depressing' and complains that he didn't get enough * grades.

As much as i appreciate and understand how hard the OP worked, he needs to get a grip. I can't imagine how he will cope in a real crisis or even if he didn't get the *.

Must have done..

So because i tell the OP to get a grip, stand back and be proud instead of fussing over *s, i automatically got average grades?

You did better than I did when I did mine!

I wouldnt worry about it, when I got my GCSEs I applied to go to a grammar school, biggest mistake! I went there, knowing I wasnt overly clever but thought Id give it a go. The people where nice enough but so much obsession with grades and performance and the whole place was a bit stuck up.

Went back to my old school, did my A-Levels there, went onto be head boy :D

The most important thing I learnt is these things really dont matter! I learnt far more about dealing with people and socialising than I ever did about Geography! Not to say that A-Levels arent worth anything!

Anyway, I didnt do too well in my A-Levels either, basicly through lack of trying, I was very laid back, Id never revised for an exam in my life until I got to Uni.

Anyway long story short, Im now at an alrightish uni, if Id tried harder at A-Level probably would be at an even better one, but hey-ho cant dwell on these things, and I have fun!

Thanks for the constructive replies :D

Couldn't give a toss to those of you who love winding people up such as SideWinder and Feek.. Maybe you ought to get a grip and start learning how to be a little more helpful instead of throwing out sarcastic replies.

EDIT:

Grammar school student ≠ posh toff.

True :D

Christ those results are rubbish, you are going to fail in everything you ever attempt now and should just give up.

[/sarcasm]

Seriously though one A* and 6 A's?! Those are bloody brilliant grades, it will get you into any college course and get you into uni, if you get depressed over things like that you are going to spend the rest of you're life depressed about something or other.

To be fair, i very rarely aim to wind people up. You may even browse my other posts if you so wish. I do have a point - you are concerned that for some bizaare reason that only getting 6 As and a single * just isn't good enough. I am only saying you should stop, smile and be proud of your extremely impressive achievement.

There is no need to be so defensive, that is how arguements start. ;)

shauncr91 phrases my post slightly differently but we both have the same point.

To consider it impressive is a matter of perspective. For an average student, yes, they are impressive or good grades. People who have always been at the top of their class tend to aim higher - when I was at school, I wasn't happy with anything but top grades, as I was perfectly capable of them.

I was never in a situation at school where anyone did better than me, so can't really comment on the OP :p.

Point taken and i do understand how some people just need to gain higher marks. A few of my friends got a the same marks - 3 As but 1 B and they all decided to re-take to get the other A.

I thought they had stopped the * rating actually...

OP: Do you know how many marks away you were from a * mark? If you are honestly so bothered, try and re-take some of the modules if you believe you have the time. It might cost a bit of money though.

Must have done..

Or maybe it's that he's got more life experience than a pretentious, elitist child, and thus knows that:

  1. GCSEs mean nothing.
  2. You're comparing yourself to the natural, cultural base-group -- your school mates. To indulge in something you might understand: "You're doing it wrong."
  3. Life is not a competition. You are not the value of your wallet, or the amount of As you can collect.
  4. Having lower grades does not lower your worth. There are two types of intelligence; wisdom and academic knowledge. At a guess, I'd say you're severely lacking in the former. Unfortunately, many people in your position refuse to acknowledge that they're wrong, and quite happily live their lives assuming that they are literally worth more than others.

You feel bad because you've subscribed your 'status' in society to your academic performance. You feel devalued as you achieved less than your peers, yet you see yourself as more 'refined' than those who only achieved Cs. You sir, are an obnoxious elitist.

I'm going to assume that you had teachers at school who told you that you were better than others, or you were indoctrinated with the belief that you were entitled to greater things. However, this is my advice: ignore them as they are talking out of their rear-ends. Such teachers only want to get the good grades to benefit the institution, and they will push you in anyway they can.

If you should learn anything before you leave this thread, know this:

  1. You were lucky enough to go to a grammar school. Not many other people get such a chance.
  2. You've had a lucky head-start so far, but that does not mean that life owes you anything.

To be fair, if he genuinely is cleverer than others and worked harder than others I don't see why he shouldn't be disappointed with not doing as well as them.

But GCSEs do mean next to nothing unless you want to go to a top-10 uni tbh.

Not entirely - but I know it wasn't much.. only a few marks.

Thanks.. that's exactly what I was trying to say in my original post. :p

GCSEs basically mean nout unless you want to go to a top-10 uni so don't beat yourself up or anything.

And even then they mean nothing compared to A levels.

Don't listen to people saying "you're stupid for being disappointed with those grades". If you think you could/should have done better, then perhaps you could. But don't beat yourself up, make sure that next time you work hard and get the best possible grades.

Everyone works at different levels, and it's really not helpful being told by someone else that you're not allowed to feel disappointed with your own performance.

Thanks p4radox, I guess GCSE's arent ALL that important over A Levels.. just been reading over some A Level past papers and jesus christ they look hard lol. Mind you - haven't learnt any AS /A2 level material yet lol.

Guess if you work hard enough, grades are easy to achieve. :D

True. Hard work easily makes up for any small differences in natural abilities, especially at A level. A friend of mine got lower GCSE grades than you, and 4 A grades at A level in "hard" A levels.

You'll get people telling you that there's a big jump from GCSE for A level, but there isn't in most subjects. The sciences for me seemed to just continue at a similar pace, but languages were quite a bit harder.

From what I keep being told at sixth form induction etc it's people like you who will end up with the better grades than people more like me who cruised through gcse year and relied on ability to do well in exams.

This fact concerns me slightly as the thought of real hard work is a nasty one :p

Lol I so hope that is true for my sake but false for yours.. Hmm, how does that work  lmao

When I was at school, I got 2 Cs (one was only half an award), and the rest Es and Fs. I hated the school I went to, I was bullied and I just hated every moment of it.

I went to a local college, did a GNVQ and then onto a BTEC. I did very well in both those courses and while I was at it, I retook Maths and English and got a C in both without much effort.

I was fortunate enough to be accepted in a few top Universities at the time for CS (Bath and Surrey). Despite me getting in, I wasn't really cut out for it, so I went to a local ex-pol Uni and managed to get a graduate job at Accenture.

I've got a lot of friends who got amazing GCSE results and arn't doing great things right now.
