Just a quick generalisation of this.

Currently have a 500Gb Samsung Spinpoint which is used in my desktop as a storage for media and work.

I'm looking towards a NAS storage because I'm working more and more on a laptop so still need access to my work around the house, and my wife does a lot of post-processing on photos. So the thought of a central repository rather than chucking a pen-drive across the room or having to copy files from desktop to laptop and vice versa is rather appealing!

But the major question I have is regarding the daily usage. Is it literally a case of, say, entering 192.168.1.?? to the NAS and creating a network mapping or is it all web-based?

Idealling I just want to be able to save work on X:\Work\ and have it accessible no matter which computer/laptop I use.

You can map drives from any pc on the network and just open it like you would normally.

The Synology quick start even has a map network drive button that automates the admittedly simple manual process of setting up a network drive.

In use it's just like using an internal HDD - just a touch slower.

That's brilliant, cheers folks. Just hope it's a reliable purchase now!

Thanks again.
