Ramadan Mubarak

Ramadhan Mubarak. :)

I can understand from a non-muslim point of view, it might be difficult to understand the point of fasting but it is not simply to starve yourself.

O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint,-
-Holy Quran 2.183

Fasting does not simply mean refraining from food, although that is the main thing. Yes it's difficult, especially for those in hotter countries but it teaches a person self control, it makes us appreciate food and water a lot more and gives us an idea how poor people in the world feel who have no food. It makes a person more God conscious, you are less likely to lie, cheat, steal etc because you are constantly aware you are fasting.

It is also one of the 5 pillars of Islam, compulsory for all muslims who are able to do it.

Its not hard in all honesty, in fact its not even that bad for you, its not as if you arent eating anything at all.

Decent bowl of Porridge in the morning keeps you going for much of the day, and then a decent meal in the evening to kill the hunger pangs:p Infact I end up putting weight on during this month.Ive worked it all out and i reckon this year im going to continue to train, but i will do it later at night, and do interval training, so I will become faster and lighter, I will still be taking on 1700 odd cals.

Its not just about the food,it makes you appreciate what the poor have to go through, it makes you focus your mind on other more important things like family, We are meant to try and become better people, I try not to swear and look at boobies, I try and not to become as angry in the car as I normally do.

Its much more spiritual than just giving up your pints and pies:p

What about the professional footballers over here? Not sure if people like Anelka will be fasting, but I remember seeing Freddy Kanoute on tv a year or two ago saying that he fasted and played/trained. Must have been tough

I know the likes of Kolo Toure have fasted before.

Yes, why should it matter?

To some people a mug tree is a pointless waste of wood, to others an essential kitchen item. Its all personal opinion.

Just because I don't feel the need for religion in my life doesn't make it wrong for others, and I don't feel the need to mock them just because they are different.

It's the strength of character to stick to those beliefs that I admire, the fact that they are different to mine is irrelevent.

PK!

Great post m8. :) Refreshing to see someone that doesnt think "o noes, muslims, wheres the bombz0rs"

Ws and thank you, Ramadan Mubarak :)

The point of Ramadan (pronounced Ramzaan but some call it Ramadan as well) is not only to fulfil your religious duty, it is to bring you 'back to basics' in a way.

This is done through daily prayer where everybody gathers, when the fast is completed each day you eat with your family, you appreciate just how hard a simple day is without food or water, you appreciate how fortunate you are, etc

In Islamic history Muslims have starved for several days and others to death, in comparisant it is a small expectation.

I continue my daily activities and have to slow down on somethings, and yes some people have ate in my face for mockery but all that does is strengthen my belief.

To the weight lifters and gym go-ers I wouldn't be worried about muscle loss, just cut back on your training and understand that you gain reward from Ramadan.

Those that are going on about eating in front of muslims, mocking muslims, etc that is obviously entirly your choice. One thing you should know is that Islam is about peace, I practice it for that very reason regardless of what you see in the media I know this because I study it myself, you can't get a real understanding of any religion without finding out the information yourself; the media and online websites are not the best source.

Try and treat people on an individual basis rather than a whole.

1/2 hour away from sunset, and tbh im not really hungry, i want to eat, but im not starving, ive been busy all day so havent even had a chance to really think about food.

Asim, porridge is your friend mate, dont bother with paratha's and stuff. stick to good old Scottish porridge.

I havent had a paratha since I was 10 :p
Ok an exageration but asian food never really stuck in my house, and now living alone so its mostly oatmeal, protein shakes, chicken, rice, etc

Congrats to all who got through day 1

I would have thought fasting for a period of time has pretty negative health effects? If it gets longer every year surely eventually it will be of a length of time too great for anyone to survive it?

The islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and works out about 11 days shorter then the solar year, therefore every year the month of ramadan moves back 11 days for us here. As we are getting closer to summer, the days are getting longer therefore the fasts are getting longer but eventually it will reach march/april and the days will go shorter again. Hope that made sense, basically next year ramadhan will start around aug 19th, the following year around aug 8th etc...

I normally fast, but I'm not this year as my girlfriend didn't want me to (hey what can I say :D ). It's fun to do because absolutely everyone moans how hard it is and, for whatever reason, I find it the easiest thing in the world. Doing it to prove how easy it is, and to make people claiming it's difficult to feel bad about how rubbish at it they are, each year's not bad...is it??

@babob - that's just Shia Muslims - who are a minority of Muslims that most think are rather strange.
