Renewing road tax - save money!

Unfortunately mine expires in December. So I'll be buying 6 months then, SORN'ing the car in February, cashing the tax in and then retaxing it. This will save me over £200.

Isn't it better to get a years tax then cash it back in as there is a 10% charge for getting 6 months worth which isn't refundable.

Bugger, Forgot to do this and just renewed for a year. I think I'll try to SORN route in Feb.

I suspect Brown and his government maybe forced into a re-think due to backbench pressure a la the 10% tax rise debacle. We will wait with baited breath.

I wouldn't count on it, with rising unemployment and more companies fleeing our oppressive company taxation regime (oppressive being a relative term of course) the treasury balance sheet is going to start looking even worse than it already does.

Let's also remember that car drivers are a far softer target than poor people (the people actually hurt by the 10p debacle).

Hmm, according to this link:-

it looks like there may be a bit of concession by the government.
This is in the boxout at the bottom of the table:-
Please note: All cars registered between March 2001 and March 2006 that produce more than 225g/km CO2, will temporarily join Band K in 2009 before moving into Bands L and M in 2010.

However, the whole situation regarding the backdating of ved is unethical and the government are starting to realise that they are hitting some of the poorer families with this tax.

Agreed, can only hope they see sense. Not sure where the money will come from though?

I renewed mine in March for 6 months thinking that the new tax costs come into play 01 Jan 09. I'll get just 6 months tax when the form comes in :)

ah well I might look in to that then, however if you had to go in to the dvla I wouldn't as the pain of doing that isn't worth £200
