4870 to GTX280

Only reason I would consider this upgrade is that the minimum FPS at low res are higher with a GTX280 according to all the reviews. This is important if like me you are not running at a high resolution so I am also considering it as an upgrade option but the things which puts me off are the potential issue with Nvidia cards failing because of the manufacturing faults as reported on theinq and not being able to use a 3rd party HSF yet.

Look at the firing squad review of the 4870 they do a test on 4 games at 8xaa. I have put these links in many other threads and can't be bothered getting them again. In the conclusion it also states that the ati cards handle aa better especially at 8x where the gtx cards tend to take more of a hit. Theres also another table out there with 8 games showing you how badly hit the gtx260 handles 8xaa compared with the 4870 but i can't find it any more.

If you game at 1920x1200 or higher the GTX280 will be faster so long as you do not use 8xAA. GTX280's will also overclock better than 4870's but they are NOT worth the extra £80.

For the Ultimate card get the 280. The 4870 gives you 90% of a 280 for 66% of the price.

No was 4 games you must have not went onto the next page. 4870 wins in the next 2 also. So in 3 out of 4 games with 8xaa the 4870 wins not by much but it shows that the ati card handles that amount off aa better.

As for for 8xAA, I really can't tell the difference in games, 4xAA/16xAF is all I use generally as the increase in IQ is just far to small to care.

All it shows is a difference in performance between 8x on an ATI card and 8x on an nVidia card - it doesn't conclusively tell us anything else. The quality of the 8x AA on the nVidia could be far better just as an example.

Indeed,

If you can handle the shame not having the FASTEST THEN BE SMART AND GET A 4870 ITS THAT EASY.

Personally I think allot of the current HD4870 users are just ****** because they didn't wait for the great deals on the GTX280 we have been getting recently.

Not sure, I would just get the X2 if I wanted the best.

And the 4870 for bang for buck.

The 280 sits in and odd place for the money.

Nope, GTX260 is best bang for buck right now at £176, after the HD4850 of course and the GTX280 sits exactly where it should be sitting, in between the 4870 and 4870X2

Cheapest 260 on OCUK is 176 and I would rather have the 4870 over the 260 any day.

And I would rather have the 4870 over the £258 280.

Cause another 70 gets you an x2

The extra 70 needed for a 280 over a 4870 is jst not worth it IMO.

I would feel duped and would rather pay the extra for the fastest card in existence.

I went backwards - 8800gts > 4870 > 9800GTX+.

Was fed up with driver problems and noise from the 4870, the only game i play that ive noticed any difference is grid (having to get rid of FSAA).
