What job now?...Lost

Yes. I'm actually taking up another job at a cafe soon to make ends meet..

Blimey, depends what you're doing I guess but a chap started here not long ago, he'd be about 25 with a couple of years experience, no degree, probably on 35k.

The op has 5 years experience in building and testing servers, that's not bad experience to get you into a server engineer type role.

I guess its equivalent to first line + field support (the MD pays the transport costs). What is that bloke doing then? Can I ask which company it is?

Server engineer + exchange, all the server guys as well as the day to day stuff also have a bit of a specialism.

It's working for a regional goverment agency.

Get yourself some basic qualifications like A+ and a couple of MCPs just to get started. Shouldn't take that long to do.

I would do an MCP, but where would I get the money? Each exam (there are seven in one MCP) is over £100 to take, assuming I get the modules first time...

That explains it then.

A single exam is £88 which usually gives you an MCP in something, 7 certain MCPs make up an MCSE :)

That explains it then.

I find the pay here for roles is above average tbh, but still know of other jobs in the area which are paying well above minimum wage. And we're at arms length from central government, treated more like a private really.

Anyway, enough thread hijacking, on the other side of my argument my first job was somewhere that only hired people with degrees, they had no real reasoning for it and I know for a fact this isn't the case now since the big boss there retired.

If I do an hour's overtime each day at the cafe, I'll be making more than I do at the IT.

Edit: Yes, we are hijacking here. Apologies to the OP. But I think the point has been made, with the right knowledge and specific qualifications a degree isnt needed.

Ah you're unsure as to what job to get? But you want something varied with a little more excitement? Military my friend ;)

Money wise it also depends on what you earn now.

If you're in a 40k a year job then saying move into a support team role might prove hard finding something that pays as much.

With 5 years experience though I'd not worry about the degree imho, guys get hired here who barely have A levels and are on good money in an IT role.

Hah, If I was on 40K, I would be a happy man / boy, whatever I'm classed as at 22.

well...The 4 is in the didget...but sadly its the second didgit regarding salary  haha.

No worries for thread hijacking, it's a nice read :)

Yep, 5 years, and im not even over 15k, lovely eh?

I have looked at degrees, but the only reason I would do a degree now, is if it was specific to a type of job I would want.

do you want to be stuck at a desk - Not really, I mean I rarely sit down at work unless theres no work on, or my knee decides to be dodgey. (Random)
Do you want to be travelling but working indoors - Yes
Do you want to work outdoors - Yes
Do uyou want to travel and be out doors. - Yes

Do you want to work with people, on the phone, manual labour type jobs (this doesn't mean low paid unskilled)

I love the idea of being outdoors working, but I have no idea what I would 'enjoy'...I certainly don't want to be sat at a desk on a phone all day either...

I'm helpful aren't I ? :)

Ah yes...

Like today, I was working in Birmingham, at the Police HQ there, installing some equipment there for them...I do enjoy doing that, but I hate the madness that happens before it, and the disorganisation!! :(

I mean this morning, I was not in a good mood :p

Thought about contracting? 5 years experience in what you've been doing should be good enough to get you some contracts that pay relatively well compared to your current salary :) Athough you could argue now isn't the time to be starting as a contractor.

I wouldn't know where to start in contracting...

And by contracting, do you mean literally working for a place for amount of months as they require? Then move on type thing?

Yup, I had no clue about how it all worked 'till I got offered a 6 month contract lol.

Have you considered the armed forces?

Yeah actually...Not sure in what area though.

But even the armed forces requires some form of qualifications to enter half the time :( Well, atleast in area I have browsed over.

Riteo...Really sick of the place now :(

Need to escape somehow...

Don't you hate it when you just don't know what you actually want to do?...Or is that just me =|

Qualifications, just GCSE's, the rest is work experience and working where I am today...

Medical issues, not really...I have mild Tinitus I believe and occasionally get Raynaulds :p But nothing major I don't think...other than my knee being a pain.

theoretically I'm not stupidly un-fit or fit, I'm in the middle.

I did look at Uni briefly, but only over the last Year...but I Don't see the point in going there if It's not to study something that will benefit my job, as I said earlier...I think :p

but seeing as I don't know what job to do...Then going to Uni is a tad pointless, If I'm just going to leave there, then go into a support role or something...Which I could do now If I really wanted to.

Well I've only looked lightly in the armed forces part...I don't mean on the frontlines shooting random hoodlums or anything...Just had a look around in the assembly parts and IT comms etc or something.

It's hard to explain...I look at job sites...And I really, do not know what I am looking for half the time? If that makes sense.

the issue is, the job I have now...Is my first full time job, and I kinda got this by chance to be honest. So I haven't had any experience with trying different trades etc, so I really do not know what I'll enjoy.

theres loads of things I "like" the sound of...But doing them and wanting to do them are two different thing's.
