*** The Official Football Manager 2009 Thread ***

Yeah it just says he and him a few times. That's about it really. I'm surprised they're bothering mentioning it really.

I would laugh if when you checked a rival managers profile and instead of it saying "Has a poor opinion of you" it said "Is looking to get off with you".

TBH this is one of those so called game "enhancements" which just so trivial they are almost pointless. In my opinion FM has been like this for a few years, they are really scraping the barrel for things to say to justify bringing out a new game. I would say a good 50% of the changes in the last 3 interations of the game could have been delivered in one iteration. It wouldn't surprise me if they had one big brainstorming session 3 years ago and have been trickle feeding enhancements since then. When I look at the list of things they claim are new like more media interaction etc I say to myself, why was this not thought of when you did your last "media interaction" update? They are either just thinking things up to make very minor tweaks sound radically different or have been witholding legitimate developments to be spread over later versions. Both of these annoy me.

Had the game been out in the last week of October I would have thought the demo would be out last week of September say. Now with a November 14th release date demo could be out mid-October.

Can't wait for this. The inclusion of the 3D mode is very intriguing. Love the transfer rumour section too. Looks a lot more advanced than the previous *click on profile then get a msg saying you're linked with this person in the press*

Looking like it will be great fun as it is usually :D

Wonder if Man City will have a few billion to spend on the transfer market :p

Similarly are they going to hard code the 20 odd point deduction of Luton Town like they did with Leeds Utd? It would be a challenge to keep them up, but it should be toggleable because am I right in thinking that whenever you start a game with 07 leeds start with the deduction even if you edit them?

I think the 3D thing is going to be hit and miss really, FIFA Manager had a full 3D engine but it was pretty poor visually (FIFA Manager 08's 3D mode looked like it used FIFA2002's graphics and gameplay style)...

We'll see :)

It should be in there simply because they're going for realism, even if you give Leeds/Luton (whomever) loads of cash it's the season before that they screwed up which is why they're starting with the deduction.

I don't see a problem with it at all.

I think the hard coding thing becomes an issue if say next season, by some miracle Luton get promoted to league one, if you download an update with Luton in league one and start a new game they will still start with -20 points. The realism only works if you never edit the leagues.

Oh right I see, yeah like a data update.

Like now we're seeing people update FM08 with squads and leagues ready for this season.

Yeah I can see how that would be a pain...

This doesn't happen though.

When I did my own update for fm08, I moved Bournemouth to L2 and they started on 0 points.

The issue is on the other side where you can't add a points deduction to a team - I tried finding a way to make Luton start on -30 but it wasn't possible.

ok obviously ive only given about half a seconds thought to this but...

why dont they come to some agreement with EA and implement/icence the FIFA 09 match engine? I was a tad surprised that fm2008 came on a CD-ROM and not a DVD ROM.

Also i was wondering.. do players sulk in fm08 (e.g. Ronaldo, Robinho, Berbatov transfer situations) and do things like refusing to play, demanding a transfer etc.

Yes i know players can go missing from training. But more variety?

Or how about speaking to agents directly and trying to persuade them not to go to another club if for example 2 big clubs get accepted bids and both put in their contract offers. I dunno could give you a choice to try to a Fergie (kidnap them at *** airport and show them round Manchester etc) and scupper the other club's bid?

More seriously - tapping up options? More ways to unsettle a player?

But if the 3d engine in fm2009 is really impressive this might be the first time in a few years ill pay the full price for it instead of waiting for it to come to the bargain bin

There is a £2 billion limit in the game because of programming constraints. It could be changed but the game would have to be reprogrammed and I don't think SI will do this. They may just set City up to have a sugar daddy who keeps putting money into the club.

Simply because EA have their own management series called FIFA Manager, which uses a 3D engine based on the FIFA series (I've already said this in the thread :p) the FIFA Manager series 3D engine lags behind and isn't as up to date as the FIFA video games however.

EA wouldn't give a direct competitor licence to use their match engine as Football Manager is easily a much more succesful game than FIFA Manager. Adding your match engine that is proven to be very good, to your main rival would be horrendous.

FIFA Managers main attribute in recent years is that it had a 3D mode that was at least semi-decent.

I could have sworn I read somewhere about in FM08 leeds always start with minus 15 points regardless of how you edit them. Have you checked leeds after you started a game in your own update. As far as I know Bournmouth didn't have a points decution last season, i.e. the same season leeds had theirs, that probably why they are start with zero in your game.

edit: Bournemouth had their -10 points deduction in Feb 08 while they were in league 1, this is probably after the last official update was releasd by SI so may not have been hard coded into the game.

I've always been suspicious of the 2d match engine. I know there is a conspiracy theory going round which has been firmly denied but to me the mathematics behind the match engine is basically juggling numbers around and deciding whetherplayer A is going to beat player B and shoot such that player C saves or not, or misses and so forth. And the 2D match engine cleverly links these discrete possibilities with semi realistic looking player motion and subtly different outcomes. I.e. I'm thinking the game has decided thay ball is going to miss and is just showing a representation of the move. I mean the mathmatics can't also be simulating a player walking after a ball that's gone out of play and stuff like that, yet that is modelled in the 2D engine, so I doubt it is modelling avery little step the 2D players make as the calculations proceed, its just a series of events linked together to give the corret score at the end of the day. I'm wondering if the 3D engine will be any different or whether this pseudo randomness will be more apparent.

They have always made a point of releasing the game on CD as many people play FM on old machines not fitted with DVD drive.

Have they hinted at the system requirements for the new match engine yet? Would like to use it but enjoy playing FM on my MacBook as obviously it isn't graphics intensive. I doubt its Intel X3100 144mb integrated graphics would be up to much!

lol really? i commend them on their patience then. The database must take an aeon to load on pentium II & III s

personally i think its a MAD excuse utterly MAD..considering the cost of dvd drives nowadays (i cant find a machine without one) you need a fairly decent processor to play FM as well otherwise there is a lot of waiting between matches and end of season/loading up games.

You arent winding me up are ye? :p

yeah it was pipe-dream wishing for the management and depth level of FM and the looks of FIFA 09 in a footie game. One day itll happen...one day...

then again i said that about space games allowing the ability to land on planets get out and walk around.... Braben is my last hope...coding God that he is.

Not yet. They will give info out in bits and pieces. You should still be able to play in 2D.
