Dental marathon ahoy

I have a fear of dentists too, More needles actually.

And I didnt go as often as I should have, It caught up with me, but not as harshly as yours.

2 route canals, 2 teeth pulled. But to be honest, As I said, Once the needle had been used, It was a breeze. I HATE NEEDLES :\

i was at the dentist last week, abscess in my back teeth. now i'd already had a very deep filing and the choice was either extraction or root canal. i chose extraction.

immediately the throbbing pain has gone, mouth still sore/swollen and i've got an infection but i can live with that. beats 1 1/2 hours in the chair for the root canal.

I had my tooth pulled last month.

She gave me a local which afterwards I said "that knacked!"

She replied, "that was the worst bit."

Ok I thought.

Then she grabs the pliers and clamps onto the tooth and begins to yank it out which so much force that I thought my jaw was going to be ripped off!!!

Most horrible, horrible, uncomfortable time of my life!

LOL I haven't been to the dentist in 14 years - not phobia-related, tight-wallet related. Thinking maybe I should go now :(

This is exactly why you should get your teeth fully sorted before you turn 18 and then go to the dentists every 6 months.

Thats gotta be expensive, I had a similar experience about 10 years ago, hadn't been to the dentist for years.
I got an absys, went along and was told I needed 2 lots of root canal and a number of fillings.

Had about 6 appointments and the total bill was £550, because I am with a private dentist. Couldn't get an NHS one, even 10 years ago.

Now I go every six months and have't had to have any work done, except for a crown when I broke a tooth (Another £450).

I pay for the right to use an NHS dentist via my taxes, but there aren't any around here that will take NHS patients so I have to go private and pay again.

Phone NHS Direct to check if there is a dental access service in your area. If there is you should be able to get put on a waiting list to be allocated a NHS dentist when a place becomes available. Some downsides are that you may have to wait a while, the dentist you get allocated may be some distance away and you could end up getting allocated a dentist that is a graduate of the Treblinka School of Dentistry like I did :(

Hello there :)

I had a tooth removed 3 weeks again, it had broken off down the gum line almost and had gone a bit spundgy , thought i was gonna have to have it cut out to be honest but she got the bugger out, took twenty mins  of pushing and pulling

If she had slipped i think she would have took my head off :p, had to go back a week later for antibiotics as i had what she called dry socket due to a difficult extraction ;)

Got my teeth cleaned up and they look great now, missed some appointments due to ill health then a few years down the road trying to find a local dentist was a nightmare but it all worked out in the end ;)

Anyone know if a crown can be replaced if the top bit has started falling to pieces? Mine has come away from the spikes holding it in a couple of times, but the last dentist I saw cemented it in place good. Only problem now is it catches food particles somethings chronic and I think I'm risking decay in the tooth behind it.

I'd hoping they can just make a new "top" for the crown rather than rip it out and leave me with a large gap - got one of them on the other side and one on both sides will make chewing awkward.

Even reading this thread makes my teeth hurt :(. I hadn't been to the dentist in around a year or so however all I needed was a filling.

Sounds like you are going in for a HARDCORE session mate. Must also be quite costly given that you are having 3 root canals and other bits done!

One good thing from all this, the drugs you are getting are going to be awesome :D You'll have a great time!

This is exactly why you should get your teeth fully sorted before you turn 18 and then go to the dentists every 6 months.

 I didn't go for 3 years and now go every 2 months, needed 2 fillings but no serious work, needed some antibiotics as well because I got an infection. Never missing a check-up again, that was bad enough.

I did not go to the dentist for over 12 years - needed two shims fitted and a scale & polish :)

I now go at least once a year.

I have no problem with the dentist, my misses does and even though she chipped a tooth the other night, she wont even think about going and getting it looked at. I'm currently suffering big style from ulcerated gingivitis, its killing me :(

Jeez, 3 root canals, ive had one in my life and i live in fear of another, when he touched the nerve i nearly hit the ceiling, i dont envy you, still its your own fault for not looking after your teeth.

I had a root canal and crown a month or so ago and it was a complete non-event. It depends on how sympathetic your dentist is I guess :)

If the OP is going private, then that work is going to cost in the order of several grand, I'd have thought!

I got away with not seeing a dentist for 7 years and only had one bad tooth. Lucky me :)

My last dentist was great, the bloke wasnt patronising, he got on with the job in hand and everything was good. I had to have root canals and extractions and for all the years I was bricking it over visiting the dentist it seemed like I was worrying over nothing.

I reckon its when your young and you get a dentist that hacks about and causes extreme pain that can put you off going back.
